Excerpt: Given the changeover to digital modes by most large cities, there is no choice but to purchase a digital scanner. Some distortion of audio is present since this scanner is not of the specific quality of that used by professionals. This item is, overall, the best that a hobbyist can buy.
Pros: Clear Signal, Fast Scanning Versatile, Good Audio
Cons: Complicated Controls, Difficult To Program, Must Find A Programmer
Excerpt: If you are wanting to listen to the police, you need to ask questions before you buy any scanner.. I had mine professionally programmed for $80.. Was excited to get it home only to find out most of the police are scrambling their signals, to where you can't listen even if you have it programmed right.. I lost my $80, fortunately RS refunded my money.. Thank You RS...
Summary: I am a Sheriff's Deputy and a Firefighter/EMT. We, like a lot of departments, have gone to Digital (P25). This scanner is AWESOME. Programming is SO SIMPLE. I simply connected to my PC (get the usb cable for UNDER $30 here on Amazon, do NOT pay $50-70), and programmed it using FreeScan. I was finished in less than 10 minutes. Such a shame to hear so many people on here complaining about how difficult this scanner is, and/or how it's not user friendly.
Excerpt: This scanner is awesome, best ever made! It has close call, which allows you to find frequencies nearby, and service search that allows you to look for frequencies when you have no idea whats in the area.Custom search ranges allow you to actually look for Phase 1 P25 digital signals.Loud and clear,I bought the better BCD-536HP and I like this better. Its faster and clearer.Software by BUTEL or freescan allows you to program it with a radioreference.com subscription.Some...
Pros: Clear Signal, Easy To Use, Good Audio, Lightweight, Rugged
Excerpt: Careful study of instructions will yield great returns for a great scanner. You will need to learn much on your own. Getting telephone help should not be expected. Once I learned something about it, it performed terrifically. But you need to be patient and willing to wait to "discover" many of the features. I like it a lot. I know I have the best, or one of the best, scanners on the market. Very good quality. One needs to be technically inclined to use this.
Pros: A Great Scanner, Clear Signal, For Tech Savvy Hobbyists, Good Audio, Many Many Features, Not For Impatient People, Quality, Rugged, Use Appropriate Antenna, Weather Priority Setting
Cons: Don't Believe Neg Ratings, Get A Good Manual, Not "junk" Per 1 Review, Once Learned It's Great, You Must Be Patient
unhappyman ibought it from uniden itself, Radioshack

Excerpt: I have owned the 996XT for 3 weeks. Being I don't have a serial port on my computer, I had to purchase the Uniden USB-1 cable. This SHOULD have been included! I downloaded the "FREESCAN" software and paid for a subscription to RADIOREFERENCE.com (BOTH A MUST). It took me only FIFTEEN MINUTES to get the scanner set up and running. Now I can listen and read the manual and learn.
Pros: Apco 25 Phase I, Big display, Clear Signal, Good Audio, Good Sensitivity
Cons: Manual hard to understand, Manual On Cd, Usb-1 Cable Not Included
