Summary: Purchase date Feb 8 2015. This is my first scanner, so I obviously not an expert. That being said, I am very pleased with it. But do not buy it if you want something you can just plug in and be ready to go. It takes some reading to understand how to program and use it. I expected to have to do the research and am enjoying the challenge. Radio Reference and FreeScan are two great resources.
Summary: I couldn't use computer Softwear to program because I only have MAC. I have had scanners practically my whole life and work in public safety. I must say this scanner was difficult to program. In Pittsburgh area we do not have any trunked systems just simple conventional radio systems. Still it was hard to get programmed. But after couple frustrating hours I managed to get it done and am happy I invested the time.
Summary: I LOVE It. From reading all the reviews, I knew it was going to be a challenge to learn. That's part of the fun as far as I'm concerned. I've had it for one day now and I'm listening to all the freqs that I've missed listening to since everyone has gone digital with the help of the FreeScan Software. You will need a serial port to USB dongle since most newer PC's/laptops no longer come with a serial port (which I already had, they're cheap).
Summary: I like this scanner, but it is a little over my head to program. I have had scanners since in the 60's and this took me 3 days to program. I am still not finished programing. The channels I have in work great.
A worthwhile investment for a totally awesome scanner.

Summary: The Uniden BCD996XT is truly a remarkable scanner. As a 36 year paid veteran fireman now retired I still enjoy monitoring the various fire and emergency calls that are dispatched by our local area Fire Departments particularly the department for which I'm a retired member of. With it's many built-in features I find this to be an extremely versatile scanner to have, as far as service and reliability. I believe it to be probably the best scanner I've ever owned.
Summary: just got the scanner and two things are apparent, 1) the uniden "manual" is actually a web link via the included cd/dvd and it is convoluted to say the least (nothing is direct and succinct and programming via it is next to impossible) - i am using the FREE software called "freescan" and 2) the included serial (RS232) to scanner cord for programming the scanner can be used with computers that have only USB serial interfaces by using a serial (RS232 [male]) to USB (male)...
Summary: I am a Sheriff's Deputy and a Firefighter/EMT. We, like a lot of departments, have gone to Digital (P25). This scanner is AWESOME. Programming is SO SIMPLE. I simply connected to my PC (get the usb cable for UNDER $30 here on Amazon, do NOT pay $50-70), and programmed it using FreeScan. I was finished in less than 10 minutes. Such a shame to hear so many people on here complaining about how difficult this scanner is, and/or how it's not user friendly.
Awesome, impressive and FUN receiver- BUT- read this before you buy!

Summary: This is not a scanner you will have programmed with all you want right out of the box with your local information stored on it. It is not user friendly. It is a complicated scanner requiring complicated programming. There are some "pre-programmed" areas (Alaska, some other states) but like me it is likely your area is not already in there.
awesome scanner you wont find anything that compares

Summary: I love this scanner it is excellent product ,had great reviews. the one thing I don't like is there is a lot of info on the the operation of this scanner that you simply don't get from the manual. there is no other digital scanner on the market today so uniden has the market cornered there is nothing else to compare this to.
Summary: I have owned this scanner for two weeks. I started planning everything prior to the scanner and Uniden USB-1 cable arriving. First interfacing software; Freescan is a great program but, living in the country, I have satellite internet. Freescan will not work with my satellite internet. I understand it is due to the long ping. Both ARC XT and Proscan work fine with it. They aren't free but a necessity. Uniden should've included free software AND a USB cable.
