Summary: Purchase date Feb 8 2015. This is my first scanner, so I obviously not an expert. That being said, I am very pleased with it. But do not buy it if you want something you can just plug in and be ready to go. It takes some reading to understand how to program and use it.
Summary: I couldn't use computer Softwear to program because I only have MAC. I have had scanners practically my whole life and work in public safety. I must say this scanner was difficult to program. In Pittsburgh area we do not have any trunked systems just simple conventional radio systems.
Summary: I LOVE It. From reading all the reviews, I knew it was going to be a challenge to learn. That's part of the fun as far as I'm concerned. I've had it for one day now and I'm listening to all the freqs that I've missed listening to since everyone has gone digital with the help of the FreeScan...

Summary: Amazing scanner. The most advanced scanner with the most options I have ever had. Currently I have 5 scanners and 4 of them are Uniden. The most important thing to determine before you buy this scanner is if the police, sheriff and fire departments in your community transmit an encrypted signal.
Summary: I like this scanner, but it is a little over my head to program. I have had scanners since in the 60's and this took me 3 days to program. I am still not finished programing. The channels I have in work great.
A worthwhile investment for a totally awesome scanner.

Summary: The Uniden BCD996XT is truly a remarkable scanner. As a 36 year paid veteran fireman now retired I still enjoy monitoring the various fire and emergency calls that are dispatched by our local area Fire Departments particularly the department for which I'm a retired member of.
Summary: just got the scanner and two things are apparent, 1) the uniden "manual" is actually a web link via the included cd/dvd and it is convoluted to say the least (nothing is direct and succinct and programming via it is next to impossible) - i am using the FREE software called "freescan" and 2) the...
A very good scanner but can become an excellent scanner with proper firmware changes.

Summary: I have been spoiled by my 436. The 536 is very good also but it does have some minor glitches. My scanner is by my bed and I listen to it using an earbud. Under low volume it has some strange high pitched sounds at the beginning and end of each transmission.
Summary: I am a Sheriff's Deputy and a Firefighter/EMT. We, like a lot of departments, have gone to Digital (P25). This scanner is AWESOME. Programming is SO SIMPLE. I simply connected to my PC (get the usb cable for UNDER $30 here on Amazon, do NOT pay $50-70), and programmed it using FreeScan.
Summary: The BCD536HP has all the the makings of the top of the line scanner...except inexplicably Uniden fell asleep at the wheel. The units build quality is top of the line...sturdy and rich feeling. The advertised features...who could ask for more?!
