Whenever people talk about the action role-playing game (RPG) Demon's Souls , the subject of difficulty inevitably makes its way into the discussion. Make no mistake about it, the game is difficult, but it is not difficult in terms of skill. No, Demon's Souls is difficult in a much more diabolical way: it is a test of willpower. The more one plays the game, the more pain and pleasure centers merge until the player has trouble distinguishing one from the other. Read more

Demon’s Souls offers the kind of gaming experience you don’t see everyday. It not only provides an appropriate challenge which is often absent in recent releases, it offers an online experience that hasn’t been seen in an action-RPG before. Granted, it probably isn’t the right game for everyone - the difficulty level may be too much for some people and those who don’t have appropriate internet access may not have as much fun playing. Demon's Souls is difficult, slow-moving, and relentlessly bleak, a 3D action-RPG where death lurks around every corner. At the same time, though, it offers a lot in exchange for the effort it demands ? a beautiful fantasy world to explore, and the sense of accomplishment that comes with surmounting a well-designed challenge. Hardcore gamers have had a lot to complain about this generation. The landscape of the industry has been irrevocably changed by the widespread embrace of casual games. Even core offerings have been continually "wussified" to improve accessibility. In one fell swoop, developer From Software along with Atlus have rectified this with easily one of the most wonderfully difficult offerings in years. Read more

Click to see whether the US version of Demon's Souls holds up to your expectations In recent years, it seems the idea of making deaths less detrimental to the player has gained popularity. Most games these days have checkpoints often and dying is only a slight inconvenience. Some games take this to an extreme and have checkpoints so often that death becomes meaningless and players have no qualms with jumping off ledges just to see what is down there. Read more

Because of this reviewing gig, I play a whole lot of video games. Like a WHOLE lot. More than most, I gather. I've spent hundreds upon thousands of hours playing and writing about games over the past few years, and it can be easy to slip into a rut and just go through the motions - play game, beat game, complain about game, start next game. Every so often, though, a video game comes along that is so unbelievable that it reinvents the whole hobby/job for me. Read more

Between its active battle system and its online functionality, there is a whole lot that separates Demon's Souls from other games in the dungeon-crawling genre, bringing it into the current generation. Though this game is punishingly difficult, if you are a dungeon-crawling fan, you owe it to yourself to check out Demon's Souls. Read more

The first thing you get from Demon’s Souls in its intro is a sense of bleakness. Then, during the tutorial that involves killing you, you get hopelessness. By the time you’re actually playing the game you’re probably suicidal. Read more

Where to start? This game will take over your life. Honestly, this is a fair warning to anyone who considers themselves a hardcore gamer; it will consume your life. During the first couple hours, just like with Dark Souls, I actually thought about returning the game. But I knew it would get better and I was oh so right. Read more

I have read how people cry about invaders and how they have better gear but thats a joke.. Gear means almost nothing. Weapons are a dime a dozen, its how you upgrade / use them. you can go all melee or you can go all magic.. Its up to you. I was halfway through my first game before i started to get invaded and they were within 10lvls of me so there is never a advantage so if you die.. you die and you need to learn from how you died and what to do not to die next time.. Demon's Souls is fun, challenging, and rewarding, but I suggest anyone playing the game simply skip the opening cinematic. The music is pretty bad, although the fight-scene does look reasonably cool. Most of my complaints from a gameplay perspective, assuming you play online, is the presence of the Black Phantom mechanic. Read more

There is also a multiplayer aspect where the game is permanently online unless you don’t sign in (no, there’s no fee). It’s basically singleplayer still but you can see other players fade in and out of your game. They can’t affect your world, but you can see what they’re doing and such. Also, blood stains will be left on the ground and you can press X by them to see how a player died which may give you hints as to what lies ahead. Read more

I imported this game from Asia, and i have to say this is possibly the most difficult and frustrating game i’ve played. The first part of the game basically gets you used to the controls. Then you fight a boss, and get killed (its intentional). You then have to fight your way through a castle to reach the boss at the end. however get killed once and back to the beginning you go!! The game won’t even let you pause. Read more
