Whenever people talk about the action role-playing game (RPG) Demon's Souls , the subject of difficulty inevitably makes its way into the discussion. Make no mistake about it, the game is difficult, but it is not difficult in terms of skill. No, Demon's Souls is difficult in a much more diabolical way: it is a test of willpower. The more one plays the game, the more pain and pleasure centers merge until the player has trouble distinguishing one from the other. Read more
- Clinging to the tiny sphere of light surrounding my character, squinting in a futile effort to penetrate the blackness that threatened to swallow me whole.
- Being one-shotted by a demon's sword that clipped through a pillar and being forced to replay the entire stage.

Demon’s Souls offers the kind of gaming experience you don’t see everyday. It not only provides an appropriate challenge which is often absent in recent releases, it offers an online experience that hasn’t been seen in an action-RPG before. Granted, it probably isn’t the right game for everyone - the difficulty level may be too much for some people and those who don’t have appropriate internet access may not have as much fun playing. Hardcore gamers have had a lot to complain about this generation. The landscape of the industry has been irrevocably changed by the widespread embrace of casual games. Even core offerings have been continually "wussified" to improve accessibility. Click to see whether the US version of Demon's Souls holds up to your expectations In recent years, it seems the idea of making deaths less detrimental to the player has gained popularity. Most games these days have checkpoints often and dying is only a slight inconvenience. Some games take this to an extreme and have checkpoints so often that death becomes meaningless and players have no qualms with jumping off ledges just to see what is down there. Read more

Because of this reviewing gig, I play a whole lot of video games. Like a WHOLE lot. More than most, I gather. I've spent hundreds upon thousands of hours playing and writing about games over the past few years, and it can be easy to slip into a rut and just go through the motions - play game, beat game, complain about game, start next game. The first thing you get from Demon’s Souls in its intro is a sense of bleakness. Then, during the tutorial that involves killing you, you get hopelessness. By the time you’re actually playing the game you’re probably suicidal. Read more
