Dead Space

Dead Space is a third-person shooter and science fiction survival horror-action game that was developed by California’s EA Redwood Shores. It was published by Electronic Arts and it was released on October 2008 not only for the Sony Playstation 3 but for Microsoft Windows and the Xbox 360 as well.

The game is set in deep space during the 26th century. Its players take on the role of Isaac Clarke, a space engineer who works for a company called the Concordance Extraction Corporation (CEC). This company operates giant mining ships across the galaxy. The story begins when Isaac Clarke is sent to repair what seemed like a mechanical failure in a space ship called the USG Ishimura. Upon arrival, Clarke learns that the ship’s crew has been taken over by an alien infestation called the “Corruption.” This virus-like infestation turns humans into hostile alien creatures called “Necromorphs.” Players must fight these creatures in order to stay alive and progress in the game.

In Dead Space, Necromorphs do not die so easily. They can adopt new stances and tactics depending on how they are wounded. There are those that sprout new limbs when wounded while others give birth to new Necromorphs.

Dead Space does not offer a head-up display (HUD) but features holographic projections that display information. Players can purchase and sell items at an in-game store.

Because the character is an engineer, the player has access to mostly non-traditional weapons. These include a plasma cutter, a hydrazine torch, and a force cannon that emits shock waves. Among the traditional weapons available is a riple-barreled automatic military rifle.

Overall, Dead Space is an extraordinary game with tons of shock value and action to whet any fan's appetite for some time, and with a campaign that lasts a steady 10-12 hours, that’s plenty of time to get lost aboard the Ishimura. While the missions could have been a bit more fleshed out and a multiplayer component would have been welcome, the overall execution of the game is one of the highest quality; a factor that will help it lead this year’s Game of the Year... On the whole though, Dead Space is a superb survival horror romp that's guaranteed to scare. If you like Resident Evil 4, you should definitely go out and buy this game right now. It's clearly set up for a sequel, and we can't wait. For now though, we'll leave you with the obligatory 'best played alone and with the lights off' advice. Go on. You're not chicken are you? In the end, EA proves that they can easily compete in the survival horror genre and in some aspect they have mildly reinvented the genre. I think Dead Space could turn out to become a new successful franchise, offering enough quality to even compete against Resident Evil 5. I must say, Resident Evil 4 is a bit better than Dead Space, but EA did a fine job in bringing a fair amount of gore and scary moments. I personally found Dead Space a lot scarier than Resident Evil... Read more

EA has decided to buck the trend this year; a company so used to spewing out sequels is now concentrating on starting new franchises, and EA Redwood Shores latest, Dead Space , has all the ingredients to become another big hit. With an animated comic book and animated movie already released, the markers have been firmly set; now it’s time for the game to deliver. So far, it’s on the right track. So few survival horror games throw you into space to fight aliens,... Read more

WHERE DO I START. I HAVE NEVER LIKED THE HORROR THEME GAMES IN THE PAST. I FOUND THEM TOO TWISTED AND REALLY SICK TO BE HONEST. THIS GAME IS DEFINATELY NOT FOR KIDS BUT IT ISN'T A MINDLESS SHOOT THE ZOMBIES IN THE HEAD GAME EITHER. IT IS TRUELY UNIQUE AND BUILDS THE STORY LINE REALLY WELL. I HAVE COMPLETED IT SEVERAL TIMES ON DIFFERENT DIFFICULTIES AND IT IS STILL ALOT OF FUN AND STILL MANAGES TO MAKE ME JUMP BACK FROM TIME TO TIME EVEN WHEN I KNOW WHAT IS COMING. THE... Read more

Dead Space is generally a fun game, but it's not really all that scary in my opinion. The story is great overall, but it does get annoying when the characters encounter one problem after another and have you specifically head over to the area. In real life, people would not be up for this shit as the game constantly forces you to take the most dangerous and life-threatening route. Like the usual Horror/Survival game tradition, you end up being the only one alive in the... Read more

If your a fan of horror games this is a definite buy. I played it once on my friend's Xbox 360 and was instantly hooked and just had to purchase it for my PS3. Definitely play on Impossible difficulty if your in for a REAL scare. The game just isn't as terrifying on any other difficulty. The ammo is scarce, enemies take more to dismember/kill and you practically die in 2-3 hits. I highly recommend purchasing the Tank Pack ($3.99) and Steam Punk Force Gun ($.99)... Read more
