Bioshock is a first-person shooter (FPS) video game that was developed by America’s 2K Boston/2K Australia. It was first released in August 2007 for the Windows operating system and the Xbox 360. In October 2008, the Sony Playstation 3 version was released. This version was developed by 2K Marin.

This first-person shooter game combines the elements of role-playing and survival horror games. It is set in an alternate history 1960 where players take on the role of Jack, a plane crash survivor who finds himself in an underwater city called Rapture. This dystopian city is populated by mechanical drones and mutated beings. Players must adapt to this new environment and survive the attacks of those who populate the city.

Players of Bioshock are equipped with three different types of resources. These include Adam, Eve, and money. Adam can be acquired in many ways throughout the game. They are categorized into four groups namely the Combat, Engineering, Active, and Physical technology trees. These can be used to purchase plasmids, an extra-chromosomal DNA molecule that provide is users with special powers including telekinesis or the ability to electrocute, incinerate or freeze foes. Quantities of Adam can also be used to purchase Eve and other genetic mutations. Eve are used to fuel active plasmids and money is used to purchase ammunition and other items. Money can also be used to override in-game security elements.

The Playstation 3 version of Bioshock contains content not included in the Windows and Xbox 360 versions. This includes an additional difficulty mode called “Survivor.”

Overall, BioShock is still as powerful an interactive experience as it was a year ago. It's lost none of its freshness, its newness or its impact. It's the thinking man's shooter and poster boy for the 'games are art' brigade. On PS3 it still is. For many BioShock was 2007's game of the year. How funny that for PS3 owners it might be 2008's. Despite being over a year old, Rapture shines through the dark sea like a lighthouse on a foggy night. 2K Games has delivered on its promise in providing PS3 owners with an equally impressive port as the original. Read more

If you're a PS3 owner, you've waited far too long for the plasmid-wielding, Big Daddy-fearing, little sister-loving experience that is BioShock. The wait ends now, as X-Play has your review. Read more

BioShock a year later is still a fantastic experience, and its still a game that every gamer should play. If you need extra convincing, the forthcoming DLC, called "Challenge Rooms," might do the trick, as might the slight graphical boost. Really though, I can't say much more than this: BioShock is a great game, and you should try it. Those looking for a System Shock 3 or a more arcade-like shooter should think twice, but everyone else should dive in. Read more

Awesome game, one of the best storylines in a game I've ever experienced, better than a lot of movies too. However, after one playthrough, there's little incentive to play again, especially since you can get the platinum trophy with just the one go. There is some DLC coming soon, maybe that will give some more replayability. Definatley a rent, I wouldn't buy though. Read more

Bioshock has to be the most immersive game ever made. Bioshock is a masterpiece of narrative story telling and graphical atmosphere. The inhabitants of Rapture are freaky but oh so real and crazy. The presentation is amongst the best on 360 let alone the PS3. There is absolutely no denying that this is visually and narritively one of the best games ever created on this generation of consoles. Read more
