WWE SmackDown! vs. RAW PS2 Review

Console Obsession
31 May 2010
  • Excerpt: The SmackDown series is a major part of our annual gaming diet, and for very good reason too. The franchise may not be perfect, but it offers the very best of grappling action and multi-player amusement. Here Comes the Pain was critically acclaimed for its solid engine and attention to detail. The question is, does this new instalment build on that?

WWE SmackDown! vs. RAW

Playstation Illustrated
6 June 2006
  • Excerpt: To give you an idea of the last time I sat down and watched professional wrestling, Stone Cold Steve Austin was the champ of the WW F . Apparently, gone is the Rattlesnake, as is the “Federation,” which has been replaced by the word “Entertainment.” All of this is nothing new, I realize. However, this paints the picture of how long it’s been since I watched the male soap opera. And speaking of painting a picture, THQ does just that with WWE SmackDown! vs. RAW .

  • Excerpt: One thing is for sure here, and that is that over the last few years, THQ seem to have accepted “slightly above average” as a standard for their wrestling games. The RAW series for the Xbox is/was absolutely laughable after extended play, the GBA iterations have only done what is required, the Gamecube’s Wrestlemania titles have been fair to middling, whilst the Smackdown! releases for the PS2 have been the best of the bunch.

  • Excerpt: The third reason you may not find many players online is due to the absolute lack of match types available to be played online. You only have two choices: normal singles match or bra and panties. That's it. No tag teams, no hardcore, no TLC, no hell in a cell, no nothing. Just one-on-one normal rules matches, or a one-on-one bra and panties match.

  • Excerpt: WWE SmackDown! vs. Raw is THQ's latest 'rasslin title for the PS2. Some of its most talked about features don't quite live up to the hype, but the gameplay is better than ever and that is what counts. Find out what went right and what went horribly, horribly wrong in our full review.

  • Conclusion: If you like watching wrestling, or wrestling itself, then this is the game for you. It's got some good features compared to previous THQ efforts, and even if you don’t like wrestling, be sure to rent the game and see it for yourself.
