World Snooker Championship 2005 PS2 Review
31 May 2010
Excerpt: If gaming has taught this reviewer anything it’s that Snooker isn’t as boring as he once thought. Blade’s Simulation of the sport has shown him the errors of his ways, and he can now appreciate the deliberation that each individual places into the sport. In fact Snooker turns out to be a strategic and even exciting sport, and it’s all simulated well in the newly titled World Snooker Championship.
Excerpt: Everyone has a hobby: Something you do in your spare time (or not) that you enjoy maybe once or twice a week. For a large part of my childhood my free time was taken up playing snooker. I spent up to 15 hours a week in dimly lit snooker halls and therefore was also interested in playing snooker when I couldn't get to a club. Back in the days when 486 equated to a powerful PC Virtual Snooker was a classic.
Excerpt: Another year, another update to the only snooker simulation that is worth even considering. Quite why Sega and Blade bother is beyond me, to be honest, since they could sit back, count the pennies and just forget about snooker for a few years. Its not like there’s a great deal of competition on the shelves, barring a few budget priced cue-’em-ups, so they wouldn’t lose their crown. But yet, they soldier on.
Excerpt: Let’s be perfectly honest; snooker simulations appeal to fans of the sport and no-one else. World Snooker Championship 2005 is aimed at this small niche market and little more. It continues the series of all-conquering games from Blade, but if snooker isn’t really you’re thing, then read no further. When you start up WSC , you’re prompted to create your own character to take through the career mode, complete with physical appearance and abilities.
Conclusion: Gripes aside, all in all, what we have here is another highly respectable update of the best and most playable simulation of the great game – but to be honest it’s unlikely to appeal to anyone other than snooker loopy nuts (like us), and needed even more of a tune up than it got.
Pros: The ball physics totally convince, and are even better than before., The game allows you to play like a Pro and make big breaks., Over 100 of the World’s top Pros - and they’re better animated than before., You can play 8-ball and 9-ball pool too!, Online play and rankings., It’s out in time for the real World Championships.
Cons: Still some issues with the control method and aiming., The players still don’t actually look or act that much like the real thing., The Tour may be too difficult for the casual snooker player.
