  • Excerpt: Poker games haven’t come of age when it comes to the current generation of consoles. The current poker boom should be enough to correct that, of course, as more publishers and developers look to turning the sport into the perfect console game. Activision have tried, as have a number of smaller publishers ‘ and now it’s the turn of Coresoft, who have been given the World Poker Tour licence, with which to do what they wish. And from first looks, they’ve done a fair job.

  • Excerpt: There was a time when you just couldn’t get enough F1 games. Every game had the latest license, the big red Ferrari and the German cheat who drove it, every game had the official licensed courses, including Monaco in all its glory, and every game had Murray-bloody-Walker. So without further ado, let’s go-go-go! The next money-spinning series seems to revolve around poker.

World Poker Tour Review

GameSpot
25 April 2006
  • Excerpt: Late last year, 2K Sports delivered its first foray into the world of professional poker with World Poker Tour, a game based on the popular TV show of the same name. The game was based on the engine developed by former World Poker Championship developers Coresoft, and at the time of its release, it was the best console poker game you could get, despite a few significant flaws in design and artificial intelligence.
  • Pros: Fairly lengthy career mode that feels like it goes somewhere, Infrastructure online play, Robust create-a-player function
  • Cons: Graphics are more impressive looking on the PSP, but still not good, Commentary is mostly repetitive and flat, The ability to look at stats for player tendencies at any point in a game seems like cheating, Artificial intelligence relies much too heavily on checking, and it makes some exceedingly dumb calls from time to time, Online functionality is clunkier than it ought to be

[Mini-Review] World Poker Tour

  • Conclusion: It's getting there, but even $20 sadly isn't enough to keep the game interesting once the license novelty wears off.

  • Conclusion: All told, for $20 World Poker Tour has enough to offer poker fans to make it worth checking out. Like every other retail poker game out there, this one has its share of flaws. But those flaws don't add up to nearly as much of an overall detriment as the other poker options currently available, thus making it the best one out there for consoles to date. Maybe that's sort of a loaded statement, since many of these games are just flat-out bad.
  • Pros: Fairly lengthy career mode that actually feels like it goes somewhere, More online play for the PS2 and Xbox, A gaggle of crazy poker games, Robust create-a-player function.
  • Cons: Graphics are still downright ugly, Commentary is mostly repetitive and flat, Artificial intelligence relies much too heavily on checking, and it makes some exceedingly dumb calls from time to time, Pro players are hardly used and are barely noteworthy.

World Poker Tour

Gamecell

  • Conclusion: So, the gameplay is reasonable, if predictable and the facial gimmicks are flawed but amusing. The load times are excruciating, the dealers are obviously missing fingers and the graphics are not exactly a million dollars. For diehard fans of the WPT only. All others, get a cheap game for your mobile phone, play it online for free, or just get a few buddies together, a couple of beers and baize tablecloth, and spend the money on a nice set of poker chips in an aluminium...
  • Pros: It’s Texas Hold’em, Giving your character overlarge boobs!, Some nice videos for fans of the WPT stars
  • Cons: Clunky interface, AI not quite convincing, Silly loading times, Gimmicky facial ‘tells’

  • Conclusion: Seeing as you are reading this review you undoubtedly have access to the internet which means you already have 100′s of sites out there offering you most of the same features the game does. So why should you buy 2K’s WPT game? Well first off if you have ever watched the TV shows then the way this game is presented should please all long term fans.

  • Excerpt: "World Poker Tour on köyhäksi jäävä yritys tuoda Texas Hand Hold 'em-pokeria myös konsolipelaajien ulottuville. Pelin graafinen vaisuus ja sisällön köyhyys ovat pelkkiä sivuseikkoja, kun ajattelee miten karmaisevasti koko pelin idea jo itsessään romuttuu rahapanosten puuttuessa konseptista. Edes nettipelistä ei ole tämän kokonaisuuden pelastajaksi, kanssapelaajien joko puuttuessa tyystin, tai pelatessa riskialtttiisti kuin juopuneet miljonäärit konsanaan.
  • Pros: + Edullinen konsolipeliksi
  • Cons: - Perusidea romuttuu ilman rahapanoksia, - Maailma pullollaan parempiakin tapoja pelata pokeria, - Graafinen toteutus tekee pelistä sietämättömän hitaasti etenevän, - Nettipelipalvelimet enimmäkseen autioita
