Excerpt: Even before its release, Fusion has been the target of scrutiny and skepticism. Early reports highlighted a glitchy engine and quirky gameplay elements that left a bad impression among many fans. After the first few minutes spent with the game, I could see why. Fusion is an entirely different package compared to previous editions; one which fans will accept for better or worse.
Excerpt: It was the game that all but defined the attitude, style and essence of the original PlayStation. In the UK, it was the game of choice when SCEE wisely placed PlayStation kiosks in some of the hippest clubs. It was a redefinition of speed in gaming and it was a showcase for the start of the close knit relationship that licensed music and games could share.
Excerpt: It's perhaps the most heart held sci-fi racing series across any platform. Others strive to touch it, but they can't. F-Zero doesn't come close, and Extreme G3 is almost there. What is this series I'm talking about? WipeOut. Originally done by Psygnosis (who published titles like Colony Wars, G-Police, Psybadek and Formula 1) the WipeOut series had seen 3 iterations of the PSX, and even one of the N64 right before Psygnosis was bought out by Sony.
Conclusion: At the end of the day, Wipeout Fusion has surpassed all my expectations. More than anything else, it's got almost unparalleled longevity and most will want to see it through to the very end. The game plays well, looks good and has some of the most devilish weaponry devised, you'll invite your mates over just to toast them. Sony Studios Liverpool: (aka Psygnosis) kudos for not stuffing it up.
