SwankWorld

  • Excerpt: Total Overdose can only be described as the love child of Max Payne, Grand Theft Auto, and raised in front of a TV that played Robert Rodriguez’ El Mariachi movies 24 hours a day. It attempts to take the greatest elements from those mediums and combine them all in one sleek and spicy package and it...

Total Overdose

Playstation Illustrated
11 July 2006
  • Excerpt: Total Overdose is a GTA clone that tries to be something more by changing the set-up and location, and adding some John Woo-like action moves, but alas, it falls short and ends up being nothing truly special.

  • Summary: Total Overdose is far and away the best alternative to Grand Theft Auto and shows Driv3r and True Crime up as the embarrassments that they are in comparison. Total Overdose is definitely not up to the standard of GTA yet but given time and plenty of effort this can become a game series to rival...

  • Conclusion: The gameplay borrows elements from other successful games, the graphics and sound are more style over substance, but I couldnt help having a great time while playing this game. Sometimes you dont need to play a game that is entirely original to have a good time, and sometimes you just want to blow...

  • Conclusion: Great fun to play, we never thought we would say this but GTA finally has a challenger, there are a couple of very minor problems with the game but nothing that will make you think that buying it was a waste of money.

Total Overdose

Gamecell
20 September 2005
  • Conclusion: What really lets Total Overdose down is its loading routines. They’re never very long but TO’s maps are kind of piddly compared to GTA’s massive environments, and the way the game has to load each district at a junction is intrusive and feels kind of shoddy, like the developers ran out of time.
  • Pros: Lots of free-roaming to do – drive cars, shoot guns, explore., The combat and comic book violence is fun, Nice sense of humour, It’s another GTA wannabe!
  • Cons: Lots of graphical and camera glitches, The city is split with some intrusive loading, It’s another GTA wannabe
