Tomb Raider Anniversary

Digital Chumps
18 March 2008
  • Conclusion: I liked the original Tomb Raider for its interesting story and challenging, intriguing, environments. Camera and control problems put a damper on it, but with Anniversary, all things are much improved. The visuals are much nicer, the controls are improved and more responsive, and the tombs are as captivating and interesting as ever. This is an easy recommend to anyone who enjoys any Tomb Raider game or is just looking for a fun and rewarding third person adventure.

Tomb Raider: Anniversary (PS2) Review

411mania.com
12 September 2007
  • Summary: has its issues, but it's a well-made look back into gaming's past and a nice adventure romp on its own. Personally, I would've preferred the developer focus its efforts on an entirely new game, but 's still worth a play-through and proves that the franchise still has legs, especially if clad in Daisy Duke hiking shorts.

  • Conclusion: Maybe Tomb Raider Legend spoiled me but Anniversary just paled in comparison to the latest Croft adventure. The gameplay isn't quite as solid, the graphics aren't as good, and the sound isn't as impressive. Still, this game was never intended to be a sequel or successor to Legend, it is and has always been a remake of the original Tomb Raider. Along those lines the quality is superb and the experience is much better than anything you played through eleven years ago.

  • Excerpt: Hey! Look what the cat dragged in... through the mud, off a cliff, down a chasm, over some spikes, sopping wet, half scorched, pulverized by Centaur hooves, skewered by spears but otherwise lookin' good and still sporting those two huge guns and a pair of pistols, it's Lara Croft.

  • Excerpt: . It seems like the franchise has been around forever, and for fans of the popular dungeon-diving adventures, it has been quite the roller-coaster ride. The series erupted like a volcano back in the day on the PC and PS1, but despite strong sales, the critical acclaim faded over the years.

  • Conclusion: Anniversary is not quite the game that Legend was. Though initially I was floored by how well the series had been updated, as time went on and the frustrations piled up, it started to lose the raw appeal. It's good, but not great.

Lara Croft Tomb Raider Anniversary

Gamecell

  • Conclusion: Ultimately this game is a lot of fun and holds true to original, entering a new area, solving the puzzle to moving on. And anyone with fond memories of the original will find themselves playing into the small hours to finish a level to move on and see how The Lost Valley, St Francis’s Folly, Coliseum and the Egyptian levels all look and play in this new game. There is plenty here to keep fans of the original and those who never played it equally happy.
  • Pros: Game play is spot on, Atmosphere and sense of isolation in spades, Great level design; familiar levels re-imagined well, Terrific score and sparing use of sound effects, Enough story to give the game purpose – no unnecessary narrative
  • Cons: ‘Bullet time’ feels tacked on and superfluous, Some puzzles whilst updated and well designed, don’t really challenge
