Excerpt: The latest craze to hit the ‘racing’ scene is modifying your vehicle. Whether it was tuning your engine, stylising your car, the recent crop of racing games have solely focused on looks and not the experience. However, Codemasters are here with another instalment of their highly popular TOCA series – TOCA Race Driver 3 . Expanding on where 2004’s title left off, Race Driver 3 lives up to the expectations with Codemasters rectifying the problems from Race Driver 2 .
Excerpt: Codemasters certainly isn't afraid to go head-to-head with the big boys. The ToCA Race Driver series is now onto its third iteration and while the likes of Gran Turismo and Forza Motorsport have been making all the headlines, ToCA has been gathering quite a fan base. Excerpt: Everyone has had that band or movie or maybe even a television show that they loved, but could never find anyone to talk about it with. Your buddies hadn’t seen it. Half of them have never heard of it. And, try as you might to convince them, people seemed reluctant to give it a try. Call it a cult classic. An underground act, maybe. But you were in on the ground floor. You believed when no one else did.
Excerpt: TOCA Race Driver 2 is one of the highest rated racers to date. In fact, it’s only outdone by Burnout 3: Takedown on Game Freaks 365. With such a wide variety of gameplay and great graphics, it’s no wonder that TOCA 2 caught on so fast – at least for hardcore racing fans. Codemasters tries to recapture the racing spirit of TOCA 2, while adding new racing events and online gameplay to make TOCA 3 the ultimate sequel.
Conclusion: THE VERDICT: It may be similar to last year's installment, but TOCA Race Driver 3 is further proof that Codemasters knows how to make driving games. The sheer wealth of car types on offer here should be enough to draw in any car nut, but add on to that the excellent presentation and the solid if not always spectacular handing and you've got a game you'll want to spend days playing.
Conclusion: Above all else, racing in TOCA 3 just feels authentic. Sometimes cars might feel a bit floatier than they would seem like they ought to in a realistic scenario, and there are times where your car will magically survive wicked looking crashes with little more than cosmetic damage, but generally the feel of the car jibes with the terrain it's driving on, the speed you're traveling at, and most other mitigating factors. The opponent AI also works extremely realistically.
Pros: 70 licensed cars, 80 licensed tracks, and more than 35 disciplines of racing, Two distinct career modes that should keep you busy for a while, Great graphics and sound, Online play is nicely customizable, and a lot of fun, The amount of realism in the damage modeling, physics, and opposing AI is delightful.
Cons: Amount of precision required in some races can get frustrating, Online game browser could have used a little more work, Some of the ancillary visual components aren't so great.
