  • Excerpt: Midway had themselves a sleeper hit on their hands last year with the Suffering, which is undoubtedly one of the creepiest games to come out in some time. Set in a gritty prison overrun with mutated evil, it managed to weave creepy environments and great scare moments with fast paced gunplay. Now that Midway has another successful franchise and a brand new movie deal to boot, it would only make sense to bring fans a sequel.

The Suffering: Ties That Bind

The Gamers Temple

  • Excerpt: Poor Torque. When he first appeared in The Suffering, he was sitting on death row awaiting his execution for the murder of his family. Making matters worse, he had no memory of the crime, so he himself didn’t know whether or not he did the deed. While sitting out his last days in his cell things really got crazy for Torque when his penitentiary was suddenly overrun by vile demons.

Thunderbolt Games

  • Excerpt: In The Suffering , players were set into the boots of Torque, a man on death row because one day he accidentally killed his wife and two sons. Granted, he didn’t remember any of it, but ignorance is no excuse. Torque was sent to Carnate Island, Maryland, the worst penitentiary imaginable, to die a death worthy of a convicted murderer.

  • Excerpt: Midway Games pulled its act together early last year with the release of The Suffering for the PlayStation 2 and Xbox. The third-person action-horror game was a mild success for the company commercially, but at least put them back on track. In fact, The Suffering was so impressive that it was one of our top rated games of 2004 with a 9.5 , as well as a serious contender for our Game of the Year award.

GameSpot

  • Summary: The game is solid and doesn't fall short in any particular category, but it doesn't really make any improvements to the standard extreme racing formula, either.
  • Pros: N/A
