The Punisher PS2 Review

Console Obsession
31 May 2010
  • Excerpt: The Punisher is one of the darker Marvel comic book characters, and with good reason too. After his family is slaughtered, Frank Castle became the Punisher to teach those who oppose him a lesson or two, often involving painful looking objects. It’s ideal source material for a videogame then and THQ and Volition have seen this grisly potential. The Punisher is an action game of the generic kind.

  • Excerpt: He may be just another moody man in a trench coat, but Frank Castle deserves your respect – he was dispensing comic-book justice when Max Payne was still just a glint in the milkman’s eye. And when you see some of the inventive ways he has of applying blunt trauma to his enemies, you’ll quickly pay your dues. The Punisher looks at first glance like any other generic shooter with a license.

The Punisher

Playstation Illustrated

  • Excerpt: WARNING: This is an extra warning to parents and gamers unfamiliar with The Punisher . This is not similar to Spider-Man, the X-Men, or the Hulk. This game is rated Mature for Blood and Gore, Drug References, Intense Violence, and Strong Language. The Punisher is neither a “Hero” nor a “Role Model.” That having been said, we will move on to the review. The graphical style of The Punisher is realistic and has a very gritty feel.

  • Excerpt: If you're looking for a night of good, clean fun, The Punisher is probably not where you want to start. This dark conversion of the comic-turned movie is another example of comic book plotlines making it to the small screen, and the result is a game that lets you torture bad guys until they spill the beans, but barely interact with pretty much anyone or anything else.

  • Conclusion: In terms of doing the comics justice, this game is a shining example of how to stay true to the source material, but as a game, it can feel a little repetitive. Dig it for the story and the characters, not the depth of gameplay.

  • Summary: Marvel comic stars always end up making it into either a Movie or a Game, it seems like every time you walk into a shop there is another DVD or Game that has something to do with Marvel, funny though, you always seem to end up watching or playing it, even though you said you wouldn't! The Punisher joins the list that already includes The Hulk, X-Men, The Avengers and of course Spiderman!
