Action-packed bug's life is best for tweens.

  • Summary: Parents need to know that this action game based on the movie of the same name has lots of fighting, but the violence is cartoonish. Players will smash, shoot, and bomb various insects, other small animals, and -- in one case -- a human as they battle to protect an ant colony. Although players dispatch scores of spiders, pillbugs, and the like, the game's story traces the growing empathy the human protagonist feels for the ants as he learns to walk a few yards in their,...

  • Conclusion: The Ant Bully is a prime example of inspired game design gone wrong. It's fine if you want to copy elements from the big guys but presenting them in an un-polished and lackluster fashion does nothing but make you look bad. Kids that haven't been exposed to these elements before will undoubtedly get the most out of the game, but the rest of the adventure just isn't a lot of fun.

  • Excerpt: Another children's movie. Another movie-based platformer. With rare exceptions, such as THQ's recent Cars, children's movies seem to come alongside a licensed platformer. In the case of The Ant Bully, the licensed game is being released by Midway, not a company known for releasing many children's games. It is a bold new step for them, but were they able to prove themselves able to take it well?

  • Conclusion: Unless you're absolutely smitten with what you saw in The Ant Bully movie, you should probably avoid this game. While the game does indeed tell more of the story, it does so in a way that's preachy and uninteresting. Fighting the same half-dozen insects and repeatedly gathering trivial items is no way to spend five or six hours of your life, especially when you can't even rely on the graphics or cinematic scenes to salvage anything from the experience.
  • Pros: Tells more of the story, decent selection of actions and weapons, insect world is larger than life.
  • Cons: Missions lack variety, too many cookie-cutter enemies, too few boss battles, graphics are years behind the curve, dry dialogue.
