Excerpt: Superman Returns is an interesting title to come across my desk. The movie that shares the same title, characters and whatnot, came out last summer, and here we are about to enter 2007. Still, mis-timing aside, this time-tested icon is brought to us by EA Tiburon and their long-time partner in crime, Electronic Arts. If many of you are surprised that EA’s prized sports developer crafted this game, you are not alone.
Conclusion: * Just in case you want to test my ability, the answer here is conditional: if the event takes place on land they all get disqualified for being unfit for any type of physical conflict. Underwater, Namorita wins because she gets the drop on all the others who are distractedly planning some sort of gay fish orgy.
Excerpt: Superman Returns to fight for truth, justice, and the American way; but does anybody care anymore?
Pros: This is almost definitely the best Superman game ever. The sense of being a protector of a sprawling city has never hit so close to home. Most of the powers you want are there, it’s got a great free-roaming environment, and the actors from the movie have returned to lend their voices (with the obvious exception of Marlon Brando’s Jor-El).
Cons: Saying that this is the best Superman game is almost like choosing your favorite flavor of motor oil. Yes, it’s fun for a while, but the effect wears off faster than, well, a speeding bullet. The camera still has major issues, the enemies are b-o-r-i-n-g; and even with the movie actors doing voiceover, the end result is a corny and forgettable non-epic.
Excerpt: Superman has a long, ugly history with video games. Superman 64 is known by many as the worst game ever made. Atari tried to revitalize the franchise this current generation with the release of Superman: The Man of Steel on Xbox and Superman: Shadow of Apokolips on GCN and PS2, but failed as badly as Superman's foes. Now that the largest publisher in the world has control of the franchise, Electronic Arts hopes to turn this thing around.
Excerpt: Poor copy of yet another film ripoff When I got this game to try, I thought it was gonna be another spiderman copy??I was kind of right, but still good fun none the less. Now, if you want to take the role of the supervillain, then don’t bother playing as it’s the all-american hero Superman who gets the credit?..but you cant be bad all the time, even if you may want to be!!!!
Excerpt: Yes, believe it or not DC Comics is about to hit gold once again with it’s second strong release of the 21st Century in Superman Returns… which almost didn’t happen since the movie was trapped for years upon years in the hellish Hollywood realm known as “Development Hell”, where it languished until DC/WB FINALLY got their acts together and put together a movie that was 1) within a logical budget, 2) had a winning cast (or so we hope), and 3) is guaranteed to build hype...
