Street Fighter Anniversary Collection

Thunderbolt Games
27 August 2006
  • Excerpt: Twenty years. It’s been almost twenty years since Street Fighter first graced the gaming world. After a false start with a mediocre arcade fighting game, the series’ second installment enjoyed a fan following unlike anything ever seen before. Nearly every greasy pizza parlor, second-rate laundromat, and trendy after-school hangout place had a Street Fighter II arcade game bolted firmly to its floor.

  • Excerpt: I must admit it: I am a Street Fighter addict. Luckily, I can keep my addiction in check these days. Sure, I still fondly remember when I first played Street Fighter 2 the summer of its release at the beach. What followed were numerous quarters being fed into that machine and its sibling incarnations, rentals of Super NES versions of the same, the inevitable purchase of the SNES version, and the purchase of a good number of the Playstation versions.

  • Conclusion: Many fans consider Street Fighter III to be one of the best 2D fighters ever made. When you first try it, it's a little hard to see why. Ascetically, I've never been a fan of the game - the character portraits are too raw, the music is mostly dreadful hip-hop (complete with an awful rap at the title screen), and the character design always struck me as a little lame compared to Capcom or SNK's previous works.

Playstation Illustrated

  • Excerpt: One of the oldest jokes in the game world (at least those not involving the fabled Duke Nukem Forever ) was Capcom’s ability to milk Street Fighter II for everything they could. First there was Street Fighter II , then came the Championship , Turbo and Super editions. Street Fighter Anniversary Collection manages to cram all versions of the series into one package, all the while adding another edition in the game.

Game Over Online

  • Excerpt: “Shoryuken!” For fighting fans, this one legendary battle cry echoes in their minds with every button press, every charged move or every thrown opponent. But much more than a powerful attack, the longevity of this blow owes everything to a powerful sequence of arcade titles that revolutionized the fighting genre.

  • Summary: Capcom is celebrating the 15th year of their seminal fighting series with the release of Street Fighter Anniversary Collection for the PS2. Two basic games are included, but these encompass the majority of the series highpoints. Hyper SFII is a 'compilation' of the companies classic SF titles which allows you to select character variations from all the various permutations of the original series.

  • Excerpt: It's seems a complete non sequitur to have an old school, 2D fighting game on your new-gen, 3D-enabled PlayStation2 console--but put two of the genre's very best on one disc and sell it at fire sale price, banzai.

The Next Level

  • Excerpt: Where do I begin singing the praises of the Street Fighter series? It's had a hold on me since I first saw the original game at my local arcade, and I've followed it through versions 2, 2.1, 2.2, 2.3, etc., etc., et cetera already! through SFIII and its various encores. I've probably logged more time on Special Championship Edition for the Genesis and Street Fighter Alpha on the Saturn than most people spend with their kids in a typical year.

  • Excerpt: "Man... Don, this bootleg version of Street Fighter II: Champion Edition is great. Ken and Ryu should be able to do those hurricane kicks in mid-air in the real game, and Chun Li would rock if she had a fireball. I'm going to let my hair grow long so I can look more like Ken.
