Star Soldier and Gradius fans: Rejoice!

Matsugawa J. Andrews, Amazon
15 August 2002
  • Summary: Someone once asked if the top-scrolling flight-sim/shooter is dead. I suppose the answer to this is yes...and no. True, very few of these games are being made, those that are made are good enough (though rarely fantastic) to keep the genre alive, if only for a little while. I suppose they will go the way of drive-in theaters: With people missing them, but with no one really going out of their way to keep them alive. I like Working Designs.

No real innovation, but solid gameplay and dazzling graphics

"numskull", Amazon
11 June 2001
  • Summary: Any gamer with a functioning brain knows that great graphics alone do not make a good game. True enough, but great graphics CAN have a dramatic impact on the overall experience, and this applies more to the shooter genre than to many others. Blowing up articulated enemy fighters in intricately detailed environments is just so much more satisfying than blowing up blocky little peons while flying past bland, uninspired scenery that looks like it could've been lifted from a...

Challenging, fun, but short.

29 May 2001
  • Summary: PS2 gamers starving for a shooter should rent this title. I say rent because it's short!
  • Pros: Gorgeous graphics, pretty challenging.
  • Cons: Music gets annoying, game can be finished in under several hours.

Silpheed: Working Designs goes back to the future!

offspringer, epinions.com
15 May 2001
  • Summary: While Silpheed is a solid shooter that will challenge most gamers, this game is a homecoming of sorts for those who remember playing the original on Sega CD.
  • Pros: Nice eye-candy; decent voice acting and pilot chatter; old-school shooter feel
  • Cons: Slowdown occurs at times; some weapons seem generic or useless

Un shoot excellent

NICOLAS PHILIPPE, Amazon
12 April 2005
