Conclusion: Persona 3 is one of the deepest RPGs that have come out in the past couple of years. Square might make masterpieces with their Final Fantasy series, but Atlus has gone ahead and tried something completely new. Playing the game during the day might be boring to some, but at night the game is fantastic. You may want to hold off on buying this game since Shin Migami Tensei: Persona 3 FES is coming out at the end of April.
Excerpt: You play a character whose name you'll pick right off the bat. You've just transferred to a new high school and due to some last minute confusion, it seems you'll be staying in the girls dorm. (though before long there are more guys than girls there so calling it the girls dorm is a bit odd, you also aren't the first guy moving in) Before long though, you find out why you were really placed there.
Excerpt: Your arm has been torn open. It could be worse; at least the wound wasn’t on your wrist. Of course, that doesn’t make the raw meat that was once your bicep feel any better. Somewhere in the lower recesses of your mind, you understand that you’ve gone into shock. You’re vaguely aware of the burning pain pulsing from your ruined limb, and of the blood dripping – no, pouring – out of you.
Conclusion: Persona 3 takes two of the oldest, and in some ways most antiquated styles of Japanese videogame and fuses them to create an experience that feels new and successfully takes the Persona series’ theme of an RPG starring contemporary Japanese students to the next level, even if it is essentially designed from top to bottom to ultimately be a niche game.
Conclusion: For someone who was starting to get a little sick of the constant Japanese RPGs (which includes the latest Final Fantasy games) Persona 3 was a welcome twist on the age-old formula. It never feels revolutionary you understand but it does manage to add a bit of life to the genre and is worth a look if you’re still clinging onto your PS2.
Pros: Gorgeous graphics, Genuinely different storyline
Cons: Maybe a little too weird for some?, Too much hand holding at times
