A mixed bag

David L. Gilbert, Amazon
4 March 2002
  • Summary: As the title says, my opinions of this game are a mixed bag. I liked this game, but I wanted to love it. The developers of this game clearly invested a lot of time, energy and emotion into the graphics and the story - but it didn't quite satisfy me. I've been racking my brain to figure out why, and I think I've come up with the answer. They didn't go far enough.

A reasonable, if slightly short, second-tier RPG, worth looking up by fans of the genre

  • Excerpt: Sacnoth’s sequel to the rather innovative Koudelka has some nice features, but overall is not as good as its predecessor. Set in the 1800’s, the story is international and begins in China before moving to Japan. Unfortunately the character’s clothing is anachronistic. The story is somewhat derivative: Yuri a young man with a unique power that runs in his family rescues Alice a preacher’s daughter (wearing a miniskirt and suspenders unlikely for a religious lady in any...

  • Excerpt: After so many RPG's I thought that Shadow Hearts would be like Final Fantasy. It was in some ways but it was better in others. This game is full of monstors, white magic, yin and yang, fusions and that damn voice you keep hearing. In the beginning... Rouen, France - 1913 An English priest has been murdered when travelling with his daughter who has not been seen since, and she has now been classified as missing. One month later...
  • Pros: Pretty much the whole game

  • Excerpt: Coming from a bunch of former Squaresoft members the developers Sancoth didn’t set the world alight with their first RPG on the Playstation, Koudelka. Criticised for being unimaginative and boring it would seem that Sancoth would have to try harder for their second game. Shadow Hearts, while not a direct sequel to their first game, ties in with Koudelka in some aspects.
  • Pros: Reasonable story  |  Quite good battle system
  • Cons: Looks rushed  |  Gameplay annoyances  |  Never excels

Midway Pretender to the RPG throne falls flat

pesky33, Ciao
29 March 2004
  • Excerpt: Years after the first Final Fantasy, Midway decide to release an RPG with a turn based battle system. It was never going to topple Square’s uber-RPG from its (rightful) spot at the pinnacle of role playing games – so how best to make it stand out from the rest of the pretenders. Stick them all in Victorian garb of course. WHAT’S IT ALL ABOUT THEN? Shadow Hearts is set in a sort of alternate 1900s Earth.
  • Pros: unintentional humour in droves
  • Cons: totally unoriginal ideas

A SHADOW OF WHAT IT COULD BE...

amazon.co.uk
17 March 2004
  • Summary: I started with high expectations of this game considering the reviews that I had read before purchasing. I shall start with the positive. It was very easy to get the hang of. It was great the way you actually played as more than one character. The story was interesting and got me hooked from the beginning. The thing that really bugged me, right from the start was the constant "talking" between characters.

A Good Distraction

"goldie_lox69", amazon.co.uk
8 January 2004
  • Summary: Most PS2 owners that enjoy RPG Games will know all about the Final Fantasy series. This is ANOTHER IN THE LONG LIST OF rpgs but its not your normal churn out. There is a few alterations to the standard gameplay with the addition of the judgement ring. The Judgement ring is basically a way to test your reflexes and the better you are the more powerful your attacks/action is. If you are too slow you miss and if you get that very slim red area then you critical hit.

  • Excerpt: This is a great game for the ps2. Stunning graphics, with lots of characters to interact with. This was one of my first games for the ps2, and is one of my all time favourites. A sequal to the ps game Koudelka, this game follows the adventure of a young hero called Yuri, who with a mysterious past, and who also hears a mysterious voice, saves Alice Elliot, a English girl who has been kidnapped by the mysterious Roger Bacon.
