Red Dead Revolver – Review

GameCritics.com
30 June 2005
  • Excerpt: It's been a long, hard road for Red Dead Revolver . Starting life as a game in Capcom's stables, it was headed for the glue factory before Rockstar came along and gave it a second chance. With all the ups and downs on its way to retail, it became a real underdog of the industry, with scores of people wanting to see it overcome the odds and succeed.

  • Conclusion: THE VERDICT: "Rockstar has nailed the spaghetti western with its first shot," proclaims the blurb sticker on the box. Well, not quite. While the game is a lot of fun, there's a fine line being trodden here between interesting and monotonous. The variety offered by the different perspectives of the various protagonists helps, but in the end, the game still feels a little drawn out.

  • Excerpt: With the cultural permeation of the Spaghetti Western--not to mention every other Clint Eastwood gun-slinging movie--a wild west-themed videogame need only deliver the dust-in-teeth mood, distressed musical riffs and pre-politically correct sense of justice to sate fans of the genre. Rockstar's Red Dead Revolver does all that and just a wee bit more...

  • Excerpt: You wouldn't think that a Western-themed game would be hard to pull off, but few games have even come close to being fun, much less an authentic homage to the Spaghetti Westerns that really brought the genre back from the brink of cinema extinction (and solidified Clint Eastwood as a bona fide badass) back in the 60's.

  • Excerpt: When news came that Red Dead Revolver’s time period was set back in the Old West, I was immediately attracted to its style of gameplay. Instead of toting around automatic pistols, you resort to taking your precious time to cooperate with your weapon’s poor aiming ability. Not only are the weapons crafted with precision, locations are excellently presented with miles of cascading desert without a person in eyeshot.
