R-Type Final review (PS2)

HonestGamers
27 October 2004
  • Excerpt: How do you uphold a legacy and follow one of the best games ever made? Final is inferior to Delta, there's no doubt of that. The actual gameplay isn't on the same level: Delta boasted seven ideally crafted stages with beautiful music and detailed background designs. Given the PS2's greater capacity, Final is almost a step backward, only managing an inspiring CGI intro, a handful of standout stages and possibly a single great tune.

R-Type Final

Thunderbolt Games
21 October 2004
  • Excerpt: What was I supposed to think? Can you imagine the ambivalence I felt when I heard a new R-Type game was coming out, but it was to be the last? Even as I excitedly started up the game, I thought to myself: This is the end. “This last song is dedicated to all the lovers…” For the uninitiated, R-Type is a series of games dating back to the late 1980s, which, from its inception, was always completely indifferent about being different.

R-Type Final review (PS2)

HonestGamers
6 March 2004
  • Excerpt: But it's worth all the agony, the memorization, and the sweaty palms, because there's little in the world of videogames that can compare to the feeling that you're 'in the zone' as you weave effortlessly through scores of enemy bullets and ships. Not only that, but this is one of the best looking shooters ever crafted.

R-Type Final

Game Over Online
4 February 2004
  • Excerpt: There are only two reasons, as far as I can tell, for anyone to not like R-Type Final . One is simply not liking shooters. That's okay. It's clearly indicative of some kind of deep moral failing on your part, but it's okay. The other is that you might object to how it plays, or, specifically, how you die. One of the characteristics of the R-Type series, all the way back to the beginning, is that it doesn't subscribe to the "rack 'em up" school of shooter logic.

R-Type Final

TotalPlayStation.com
4 February 2004
  • Excerpt: Plenty of reviews for R-Type Final will doubtlessly open up with fond recollections of how the earlier games in the series whisked old-school gamers off to a realm where the traditional side-scrolling 2D shooters meant outrageous difficulty levels, patterned boss fights, and wildly imaginative locales. I'm not going to do that, since I've already done so in countless news stories and relayed press blasts about the status of R-Type Final leading up to the game's release.

R-Type Final -

Futuregamez.net
15 April 2004
  • Summary: If this is indeed the last game in the R-Type series then it's a fitting farewell. As with other games this is frantic, and rock hard. You'll need to know what's ahead to progress. At $AU69.95 this is terrific value. Get R-Type Final now, you won't be disappointed.

R-Type Final Review

TVG
6 April 2004
  • Excerpt: Is there anything more that can be said of R-Type that hasnâ??t been said before? The arcade side-on-scroller classic that spawned a generation of shooters, has been slightly revamped and brought up to date to push the capacity of the PS2 to its full potential. Well thatâ??s the belief of the publisher but that aside itâ??

R-Type Final - Review (PS2)

Konsolen-World
15 October 2004
