Excerpt: Proclaiming that Pro Evolution Soccer 5 is the best football game available is about as surprising as saying that Chelsea will win the league. Pro Evo has been the purist’s choice ever since its first manifestation as International Superstar Soccer way back on the SNES. It was obvious from the start – Pro Evo was the football game designed for true football fans, for those who follow their team away from home, rather than those who support Man Utd on a Saturday evening...
Excerpt: Reviewing Pro Evolution Soccer games feels very, very familiar to me - it's something I've done every year for the past four years. You've no doubt seen the review score already, so it's pretty obvious that Pro Evo 5 is a great game, and there's nothing surprising about that. What is surprising is that each year Konami deliver a game that appears to be so similar, yet feels so different to the game that preceded it.
Excerpt: I’m betting that Electronic Arts wonder why they get so much stick. Year after year, they create an above-average sports simulation in FIFA Soccer , but yet they’re constantly being criticised for doing just that. Konami does the same thing every year, but why don’t they get the same sort of flack’ Simple. Konami makes Pro Evolution Soccer . And the gulf between the two games in terms of quality is that wide yet again.
Conclusion: THE VERDICT: If you still haven't decided which of this season's football games to plump for, this should make the choice easier. Yes, FIFA sells more, and is usually a fairly decent game (with the added bonus of all the player and team names being correct), but for a more realistic representation of the sport, Pro Evo completely outpaces it. If authenticity is that important, you can always input team/player names yourself.
Excerpt: Pro Evolution Soccer 5 has long been regarded as the videogamers football game, with more emphasis on gameplay and challenge than its rival FIFA . Here on Thunderbolt we’ve been constantly excited at this time of year as the new version nears completion, and nevertheless many lunch breaks were filled, deadlines over-run, controllers broken and swear words invented as the entire team (minus our Editor Phil, currently plotting world domination in his secret...
Summary: The best soccer game of all time just got even better. While graphics and sound could be improved there's no denying that Konami know how to make a fantastic title. Pro Evolution Soccer 5 should be in every single PS2 owners collection.
Conclusion: The game can literally lasts as long as you want to play it for. With some excellent changes and extensive squad and team options, with an improved online mode. But the frustration can really get to some and put them off a great game, which unfortunately is marred by too many changes. For the next version I would like them to sort out the player select and the through ball and passing system. But as it stands Pro Evo is the BEST football game you can buy in Europe.
