Nightshade review (PS2)

HonestGamers
8 July 2004
  • Excerpt: Think how fun it would feel to ride along trucks moving down a freeway, slashing at ninjas and running along the sides of the vehicles before leaping to another as the previous one bursts into flames behind you. Better yet, envision the crumbling remains of a massive suspension bridge, filled with gaps and flying enemies you must leapfrog across in order to survive. The game is filled with moments like this, and more. Often, they’re every bit as thrilling as they sound.

  • Excerpt: Shinobi was an original ninja game in which you controlled a special ninja in a high-tech futuristic Japan setting. This game eventually turned into 2003's Shinobi for PS2, and now to its sequel – Nightshade. Nightshade is based on a female ninja working for a secret agency that takes care of mishaps that go horribly wrong (such as a demon world portal opening into the world). As Hibina, you will fight off many different monsters called “Hell Spawns”.

  • Conclusion: It’s a fairly typical romp, Nightshade’s plot, with a number of parties racing for a powerful item. The whole thing is presented through a number of cut scenes, some in-game and others as CG. It takes on a very comic book-like vibe in how the plot unfolds. While not overwhelmingly engaging it gets the job done, though the story can get a bit dull making it tempting to hit a button and skip the dialogue scene to get back to the action.

  • Excerpt: 2002 saw more than a few updates to classic games, and Sega's Shinobi upgrade that saw Hotsuma and his world make the leap into 3D was certainly one of the higher-profile updates. The problem was, most of the attention lavished on the game wasn't for good reasons. Developer Overworks' treatment of the series was somewhat faithful, but the jump to 3D did more harm than it ever did good; an incredibly high difficulty level, cheap deaths and a camera that never seemed to...

  • Conclusion: THE VERDICT: Kunoichi does the job well. It significantly improves on Shinobi's formula with better visuals, level designs, music, and a couple of cool extras. It's also a very fun game to play and poses quite a challenge even to Shinobi vets. It's clear that Sega Wow learned from Shinobi and were dead set on improving on it. Here's hoping that there's a Kunoichi 2 in the future, because Hibana is one character Sega should continue pushing.
