Summary: If you want to win, I'd suggest picking the Lakers, who have Kobe Bryant (yeah, I know), Shaquille O'Neal, Gary Payton and Karl Malone, and Derek Fisher (He'll knock in some 3's) and Rick Fox. Or pick your favorite team. If you are a basketball sim fan, this game may be, but probably is NOT for you. All in all. I thought this was a pretty good game. It's right up there with NBA Street, although I'll have to say I like Street just a little bit better.
Excerpt: NBA Jam 2004 is the latest update of a long-running basketball game franchise. The series first debuted back in the arcades and stood out from other sporting games by having a distinctly over-the-top nature nature. Players could catch fire and become awesomely unstoppable, huge super-dunks could be performed and the digitised player graphics and manic commentary impressed many people. It was then carried onto various 16bit consoles and is fondly remembered.
Excerpt: NBA Jam was the ultimate party game 10 years ago. The pioneer of “arcade sports”, it offered tight gameplay in a wacky package. High flying dunks, basketballs that were on fire, and the complete and total lack of fouls were major selling points for the game. It went from the arcades to the home market on the Super Nintendo and Genesis. It’s made several appearances as the years pass, and now makes another appearance on the latest batch of “Next Gen” consoles.
Excerpt: While EA and Visual Concepts continue to go head-to-head in the battle to achieve the ultimate basketball simulation, Acclaim has opted to fade back with an alternative direction. Now you can enjoy 3-on-3 arcade basketball action thanks to this updated installment to the classic NBA Jam license. Essentially, much of the fundamental elements remain the same --- take it to the hardwood, unleash dynamic dunks, and shut your opponent down.
Conclusion: Overall if you were thinking of getting an arcadey NBA game then I'd go for NBA Street. This game just lacks a real hook and bored me really quickly, the play is typically repetitive, but even for a BB game there really is nothing much to do. As you can tell by the shortish review, I didn't really like the game and this is a bit of surprising disappointment as I was a big fan of the classic NBA Jams on the SNES and Megadrive.
Summary: NBA Jam is an improvement to the NBA Jam games of late, but that still doesn’t make it a worthy game. With some nice ideas, but poor execution, NBA Jam is almost certainly now engraved in stone as “the great game that was”...
