Gun

Game Boyz
10 September 2010
  • Excerpt: Introduction This take on a Grand Theft Auto style play, Gun takes you into the Wild West in a short, but excellent game by the developers that brought the masses the Tony Hawk series. In this open environment, you can move around in a variety of ways, and take part in some great shoot outs old school style. The story of Gun is simple: You play Colton White, a gunslinger raised by a hunter named Ned (voiced by Kris Kristofferson).

  • Excerpt: Sometimes, while rummaging around in the bargain bin, you'll find a true gaming gem. Gun , a game that was released with very little fanfare in late 2005, is one such game. More notable as one of the Xbox 360's launch titles, Gun was also released on the Gamecube, Xbox, PlayStation 2 and PC. This review is about the PlayStation 2 version of the game. Besides being a cheap game that's actually good, Gun is unique because there are very few Western-themed videogames.

Violent, hollow Old West action game. Adults only.

Common Sense Media
13 November 2006
  • Summary: Parents need to know that this is an incredibly violent action game. Players use an array of guns, explosives, knives, and other weapons to dismember and kill enemies and innocents alike. Players can torture fallen enemies by scalping them, and they will witness torture and extreme violence during in-game cut scenes. The game also features drinking, drug use, smoking, and implied sex with prostitutes.

  • Excerpt: What do you do when you're fed up with making yearly skateboard titles that appeal to a hugely broad demographic? Make a brutal shooter set in the Wild West that carries an 18-certificate and has the 'kids can't play this' appeal of the Grand Theft Auto series. This is what famed Tony Hawk developer Neversoft has done, and while it's not really a genre that you could have predicted they would move into, GUN is a solid entry in what will undoubtedly be the first of a new...

  • Excerpt: Brutal. That’s the first word you’ll think of when asked to describe Gun once you’ve played it. The thoughts of the maniac Reverend killing his unhelpful lush by throwing an axe at the back of her head during one of the early cut scenes will come to mind. Brutal. Visions of your ‘father’ Ned White running out of ammo whilst defending a riverboat, using the butt of his rifle to knock three attackers sprawling and then being blown up as the boiler gives in to the heat of...

Gun

  • Excerpt: The American Western as a thematic genre is one that was popular in cinema some years ago but has never really taken off when it comes to the videogame market. Outside of Red Dead Revolver and a handful of other titles, the genre has seen little to no attention in recent years. So, when Neversoft revealed that they were working on a third person action/shooter set in the old West, I was a bit intrigued, and even a little skeptical.
  • Pros: Western action with lots of sidequests, Gunplay is pretty fun, Pretty large world with some nice looking locations, Impressive voice cast
  • Cons: Story mission path is short, Save menu takes too long to use, HUD could be smaller

  • Excerpt: If you're into westerns, especially the modern, HBO-flavored ones with their "brutal honesty" thinly disguising the ratings-grabbing blatant brutality, then you'll love Gun for as long as it lasts. Which isn't that long. Which is too bad. Still...

  • Conclusion: THE VERDICT: It's refreshing to play an action game that isn't set in an inner-city environment and that alone is almost reason enough to give Gun a try. While the gameplay may not be all we wanted it to be, it's still a competent vehicle for getting you through the twists of the blood-soaked story. If you're a fan of the Wild West, you're probably already playing this, but if you're not, you might want to give this one another look.

  • Excerpt: The title of Neversoft's latest game emphasizes the law of the West. That is, to say, that life revolves entirely around the will of the gun and the man who wields it. The clever ad campaign has hyped GUN up to be an epic tale of revenge and subterfuge with a spittoon-load of gunfire and explosions. How well does the final product hold up to this image?
