  • Excerpt: With the continued reuse of decade old fighting engines in the few titles still being published, it seems as though 2D fighting games are growing as stale as a box of Krispy Kreme doughnuts left out in the sun for an afternoon. Thankfully, the folks at Arc System Works have created a fantastic and ever-improving franchise called Guilty Gear.

Guilty Gear X2

Into Liquid Sky
10 December 2004
  • Excerpt: In such a short time, Sammy and developer Arc System Works have managed to force themselves into a genre that was tyranically monopolized by Capcom and SNK. In Guilty Gear X2 , they've managed to take a place among some of the 2D fighter greats, especially by giving gamers some beautiful high-res sprites and a battle system that's fun and challenging. The story behind Guilty Gear is an odd one - the "Gears", man-made super-soldiers, have revolted against their masters.
  • Pros: Awsome 2D graphics, Lots of modes, Great characters
  • Cons: Not quite "User Friendly", Poor Practice Mode

Guilty Gear X2

Playstation Illustrated
7 March 2004
  • Excerpt: Considering the last time anyone cared to make another 2D fighting series look really, really good was Capcom's Street Fighter III: Third Strike back in '99, Guilty Gear X2 easily takes the Best Visuals throne by force. Smoother sprite animation and slicker backgrounds had never been seen on the PS2 before Guilty Gear X came along, and its sequel surely continues that reign. Every slash comes out fluidly, each move an act of magnificence.

Sammy's Mixed Bag

  • Excerpt: Sammy's most recent releases for the PlayStation 2 are sequels to two titles that I will admit I never played. However, in the end I am proud to say that I didn't play one of the predecessors while I wish I did play the other one. The following co-reviews will explain my decision even further: GALERIANS: ASH Galerians: Ash follows up on the PS1 title literally.

Guilty Gear X2

Game Over Online
13 February 2003
  • Excerpt: I’ve played quite a few fighting games throughout the years – The original Street Fighter with its now legendary sequel, and Mortal Kombat with its buckets of blood immediately come to mind. Of course, these all relied on stereotypical conventions of the fighting game. Plenty of kicks, punches and combos that inevitably resulted in stunned opponents. Effective, but terribly boring.

Guilty Gear X2

Project COE
4 February 2003
  • Conclusion: In the end, Guilty Gear X2 is one of the best PS2 games when it comes to fighting games. It has a lot of depth, a great fighting system, cool extras, and slick visuals. The complexity may scare off some gamers and some of the characters and moves are so bizarre that it may weird out some players, but that’s getting really nitpicky. This title does just about everything right and deserves to be played.

Guilty Gear X2

The Next Level
3 February 2003
  • Excerpt: The first thing you’ll notice about the game is the gorgeous high-res graphics that redefine what a 2D game should look like. There’s no question about it: Guilty Gear X2 is by far the best-looking 2D game ever created and raises the standard for all other 2D games in development. What’s even more impressive about GGX2 ’s graphics is the amount of detail given to all twenty characters in the game.
