Summary: I had extremely high hopes for Forbidden Siren from the very first time I heard about the banning of the Japanese television advertisement and for the most part it meets my expectations. Although I've dwelled quite heavily on it's 'downfalls' many of them are actually what make the game special and extremely challenging, you'll rarely find a time to settle down like you would in other survival horror games and it certainly won't hold you hand as those others do at times.
Excerpt: Do you like scary movies’ I do now. I never liked them when I was a nipper though, that’s for damn sure. I remember spending a whole summer evening in my nan’s back garden on account of all my relatives watching John Hurt explode in Alien . Years of ‘hands-over-eyes’ avoidance followed, but it wasn’t enough. It was the sounds, see.
Excerpt: While I was waiting for my review copy of Forbidden Siren to arrive on my doorstep, I did a little research on the title and ended up finding out the following useful snippets. Firstly, this title was ‘directed’, (that’s movie speak spilling over into video games again) by the guy responsible for Konami’s original and seminal survival horror title, Silent Hill, which meant I already had some idea of what to expect in terms of style and content.
Conclusion: Scoring Forbidden Siren is hard. It has all the right ingredients to make a truly great survival horror game, and it's nice to see a developer trying something new with the stealth-biased gameplay. However the controls in the game can be fiddly and frustrating to use at first, but you do get used to them. It just depends if you can stick out the first couple of hours of painful familiarisation.
Pros: Creepy, creepy atmosphere., SFX and music are superb., Nice progression in the Survival Horror genre.
Cons: Abysmal, unintentionally amusing voice acting., Some bizarre, fiddly controls., Did I mention the voice-acting?
Excerpt: Those looking for a new experience in the tried-and-tested genre are in for some luck with â??Forbidden Sirenâ??; whilst itâ??s fair to say that the game makes heavy use of the genre conventions, the â??SightJackâ?? feature lends the game a certain sense of freshness. Essentially allowing your character to get inside the heads of surrounding characters and enemies, you can witness the world from their viewpoint and also hear whatever theyâ??re currently thinking.
Conclusion: In fin dei conti…
Pros: Storia raccontata magistralmente, Tanti personaggi giocabili, Ambientazioni spaventose, Regala immense soddisfazioni...
