Final Fantasy XI by Square Enix

Game Monkeys
5 March 2013
  • Summary: In the end, FFXI is a great MMO that suffers from few, though noteworthy, issues. Play is smooth, the graphics are great, and the game remains addictive…though a lack of compelling interaction and an offer of little more than level treadmilling means it won't be for everyone.
  • Pros: Pretty, fun, and vast.
  • Cons: Limited, a bit dull, and uncompelling.

  • Excerpt: The second of three planned "Abyssea" $10 add-ons, Scars of Abyssea was released alongside a level cap adjustment from 80 to 85 in September of this year. The game continues a quick evolution to keep players interested. But unlike Vision of Abyssea, which brought major improvements, we are now beginning to see some chinks in the armor of the "new way to play.

  • Excerpt: I can hardly believe what happened here. After two especially uninteresting and unrewarding "add-on" mini-expansions (A Crystalline Prophecy and A Moogle Kupo d'Etat), the FFXI dev team surprised us with something that had decent gameplay ideas and a hilariously fun storyline. If you haven't played Final Fantasy XI in a while (or ever), here's a quick refresher: Shantotto is Windurst's resident evil-genius/wizard who cannot help but rhyme at all times.

  • Excerpt: Final Fantasy XI (FFXI) is an online only version of the very popular and highly regarded RPG series of games from Squaresoft. While not the first MMOG available for the PS2, it is the first to take advantage of the system’s new HDD hard drive accessory. In fact, it comes preinstalled on the HDD and can not be played without it.

  • Excerpt: Most RPG’s can be played for 40 to 60 hours and it is easy to know when to review it…when you finish it. However, MMORPGs are built to go on virtually forever, so when do you review them? I chose to play an entire month (the free one that comes with the title) before sitting down to my review. I won’t even begin to suggest I have even scratched the surface of the game but I think I have a firm enough grasp of how it plays to give my opinion.

  • Excerpt: As you can probably tell, assuming you know the job class lingo, I did what most players do, took a base job to level 30, tried out all (or almost all) of the advanced jobs, decided what I liked best and began leveling that job. In my case, Ranger is the job that I knew I wanted to play from the beginning but I still gave all the other jobs a taste before settling in.

  • Conclusion: Overall, this game has a lot to offer. It allows you to customize and create very special characters, by means of a variety of jobs, skills, and abilities. The multiplayer gaming aspect also provides a great deal of game play, with a strong emphasis of player interaction. The game is pretty much never ending, which means countless hours of entertainment.
