Extermination

Into Liquid Sky
16 May 2004
  • Excerpt: Extermination , showing huge influences story-wise from Aliens and The Thing , tells the story U.S. Special Forces Marines RECON member Dennis Riley, whose team is called in to investigate the strange events at a secret military base in the Antarctic. When they arrive, they soon discover that the base is overrun with genetic parasites and things that are even worse.
  • Pros: Good use of analog control, Decent voice acting, Intelligent gameplay for an action game, Fairly good story
  • Cons: Touchy camera, Weak puzzle elements, Music gets old after a while, Horrible lip-synch

Extermination

Playstation Illustrated

  • Excerpt: The graphics in Extermination range from the impressive to the downright drab. It's really unfortunate that the game takes place in the environment that it does--a military base of some sort in Antarctica--because I have a feeling that if the environment were a little more beautiful the game would feel 'better'. As it is, the world exists in a sort of drab mix of grey and white. Yes, it's realistic, but that doesn't mean you don't get tired of it after a few hours.

Extermination – Review

GameCritics.com
18 January 2004
  • Excerpt: Survival Horror is a tired and worn out genre with far too many games and not enough innovation. Theres a perceptible lack of creativity thats setting into it like gangrene. In the bigger scheme of things, its a relatively young genre that seems to have aged quite poorly before its time. Its sad, really. I mean, who doesnt love the sickening crunch of blowing away zombies with a shotgun, or the rush of running for your life from a pack of slavering mutants?

  • Excerpt: As survival/horror games go, Extermination has just been resoundedly trounced by Konami's recently-released Silent Hill 2 and, regardless, isn't quite as spiffy as Capcom's Resident Evil Code Veronica X. But as Extermination was, in fact, developed by some of the creators the original Resident Evil, the genre's watershed, the Godfather of Survival/Horror games, it's not at all bad either.

  • Excerpt: To call Extermination a survival horror game is a little bit of a misnomer. Yes, you are placed in a "scary" situation, danger lurks around every corner, and if you are not careful, you could die very easily. The problem comes in that you don't get scared very often. Oh sure, there are the occasional spine tingles, but no good "jump out of your seat" scares. This isn't really a problem unless that is what you are looking for.

  • Excerpt: Jumping from 32-bit to 128-bit, the Survival Horror genre has exploded with clones, some that are better than others, while others just fantastic in their own right. Resident Evil is quite possibly the spark on the road that led to a flame of knock-off horror titles. In addition to the whole Bio Hazzard (Resident Evil) series, PSOne owners were treated to Silent Hill, a game I wasn't too fond off, but nevertheless it was the one game that gave Resident Evil a run for its...
