Excerpt: Ephemeral Fantasia was one of the first traditional RPGs for the PS2 Console. Whenever a new console is released, it seems to instill a new hope in gamers that we’re going to see some revolutionary new games. Often, the first generation of games falls remarkably short of achieving such a feat.
Excerpt: I'm not entirely sure just where Ephemeral Fantasia 's graphical design got started, but it's fairly evident that it wasn't on the PS2. The world is blocky and nondescript, with muddy textures and a camera that takes way too long to pan around the screen. The character models fare slightly better, but the enemies are oftentimes cartoonish in their simplicity. And even Mouse and crew look a little strange, as their facial textures never seem to be quite right.
Excerpt: Ephemeral Fantasia is one of those games where the initial impression turns out to be the wrong one. Any player who picks up this game for only a few hours will come away confused and disappointed. Where Konami's first RPG for the PS2 really shines is over the long-haul with effort and exploration. The story follows a musician by day/thief by night by the name of Mouse and his talking guitar, Pattimo.
Pros: Excellent battle system, Guitar mini-game is challenging yet fun, Great concept and story
Cons: Graphics not the strong point, Loading times, You have to hold down a button to run
Excerpt: If the success of Square's Final Fantasy series is any indication, the story-driven approach of linear RPGs is the golden ticket when it comes to popularity. However, in recent years, a growing faction has also come to prefer the "do anything/go anywhere" approach of nonlinear RPGs, such as Shenmue and Dark Cloud, where plot progression often takes a backseat to things such as character development, exploration, and battle.
