Dynasty Warriors 4: Empires PS2 Review
31 May 2010
Excerpt: The Dynasty Warriors series has largely been about one thing and that’s beating up a whole army of men with funny names and equally funny beards. There is some light strategy involved, but there’s certainly been nothing deep about the series thus far, until now that is with Dynasty Warriors 4: Empires which allows you to take over China with thought as well as the usual brawn.
Excerpt: You could ask anyone why the Dynasty Warriors games are so popular and they’d be hard-pressed to tell you why. I mean, they really are the same story over and over again, with the same characters. Despite all of that, the Dynasty Warriors series still manages to sell enough to have about thirteen entries into the series and a large fan base, with myself included. Although, to be honest, Dynasty Warriors 4 left me a little jaded.
Excerpt: If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. This phrase could be the unofficial slogan for the Dynasty Warriors series, which has returned gamers to the turbulent period of the Three Kingdoms again and again for over seven years. While the series has remained popular, every new version has received criticism from plenty of reviewers (myself included) for lack of total innovation.
Conclusion: For me, Koei's games should be classed as a controlled substance – dangerously addictive, as every time I try to drag myself away from one I always find myself needing just one more hit. Be it horse racing in the G1 Jockey series, or battling cartoon aliens with a guitar in Gitaroo Man, I'm yet to play a Koei game that hasn't had that magical 'one more go' hook.
Pros: Crashing your way into a large group of troops., Nice strategy/RPG addition.
Cons: Lack of complexity in the fighting., The camera hates you.
