Driving Emotion Type-S

The Armchair Empire
29 August 2001
  • Conclusion: The game has four modes of play: Arcade Type-S, Line Training, Time Attack, and VS Mode. The arcade version is pretty much as one would expect - two laps around a specific course against 5 other racers. Line Training are courses that have lines on the road to help teach new drivers better positioning and where to brake to get the best results while racing.

  • Excerpt: Playing Driving Emotion Type-S for the first time is like having your first Chalupa: everything looks good until you take a bite. If you could simply depress the X button and never touch the analog stick, this game wouldn't be so bad. But the second your thumb takes the wheel, the artificial flavor sets in, immediately sending you to the bathroom.

  • Excerpt: When I think of great graphics and gameplay, Squaresoft couldn't be further down than number 3 on my top 5. Look only as far as Final Fantasy to see some of the greatest images and music on PlayStation. Square has ventured out of straight RPG territory with games like Parasite Eve (survival horror), Bushido Blade (fighting) and Einhander (side-scrolling shooter). So, why not Racing? Well, that's exactly what Driving Emotion Type-S is about.

  • Excerpt: Barely five months of age in the US, the Playstation 2 is already overflowing with racing software including Ridge Racer V, Midnight Club: Street Racing, Smuggler's Run, Wild Wild Racing, Moto GP, Nascar 2001, F1 Championship Season 2000, Top Gear Dare Devil, and it seems that the list is only getting longer and longer.

  • Excerpt: Over the years, the name Square (or rather, Squaresoft) has become synonymous with incredibly good, epic-scale RPGS and adventure games. Attempts to branch out into other areas, however, haven't always met with the same high marks. Square got their start on the NES, obviously with Final Fantasy, but actually crafted one of the coolest games on the system as well: Rad Racer. Flash forward over 15 years.
