PSX Extreme
20 April 2006
  • Excerpt: Dragon Quest VIII tells the tale of a magical scepter, one that was sealed away for several years until it was found by a twisted jester known as Dhoulmagus, who broke the seal and used the scepter to cast a curse upon the land, a curse that froze time, changed the king and his daughter into weird forms and enveloped the land in vines. It is up to The Hero to save the king and his daughter, as well as the whole world.

  • Excerpt: There's nothing revolutionary or evolutionary (or even particularly mold-breaking) about this candy-colored, cel-shaded high-fantasy adventure role-playing game, yet Dragon Quest VIII is one of the best things the PS2 has going for it...

  • Excerpt: To my extreme disappointment, throughout my video gaming career, I’ve been deprived of all that is Dragon Quest. This is mainly due to the fact that this popular RPG series has made few quests across the Pacific since the NES days. However, I knew that it was only a matter of time before America got its fair share of Dragon Quest greatness. As of November 15th, 2005, that wait was over, and Dragon Quest VIII was ported.

  • Excerpt: In terms of Japanese roleplaying games, there's Final Fantasy and then there's Dragon Quest (also known as Dragon Warrior). Everything else is secondary. When Square and Enix merged, it seemed that the two top RPG properties would have to compete for the company's attention. While Final Fantasy has always pushed the envelope in terms of visual presentation, Dragon Quest has been all about old school style.
  • Pros: Wonderful polygonal environments, Great capturing of Akira Toriyama's style, Solid old school gameplay, Nice voice acting
  • Cons: Music can be repetitive, Old school turn-based gameplay may turn off some

  • Excerpt: Although insanely popular in land of the rising sun, the Dragon Quest series has had a rocky history in the US. Popular in the US during the NES days, the long hiatus between games, as well as the non-release of Dragon Quest V and VI for the SNES, meant an almost decade long Dragon Quest dry spell.

Just RPG
2 November 2003
  • Excerpt: Conspicuously absent since 2001, the first RPG series from Japan, Dragon Quest (long called Dragon Warrior on this side of the Pacific), has returned at last. Bigger, bolder, gleaming with all the polish a PlayStation 2 game can muster, Square Enix’s other flagship series has set out to reinvent and re-establish itself in the States.

  • Excerpt: Everyone was talking about it. “Dragon Quest VIII is going to be the best RPG of the year” and “Dragon Quest VIII is finally coming out. I can’t wait.” I was thinking “Awesome. What the hell is Dragon Quest?” Golems… slimes…? Ohhh. Right, right, right. Dragon Quest is Dragon Warrior—the old school NES, healmore hurtmore epic I played so many years ago. Nobody told me. If they had, I would have picked up the six I missed. Provided they played like this one.

Dragon Quest VIII Official Guide PS2 Review

DarkZero

  • Excerpt: Strategy guides are a bizarre thing. I’ve never really understood bringing out official guides for games like Tomb Raider, Need for Speed , etc. They are usually short games that you can easily get a free guide on the internet to help you play through. Ones I do pay attention to are guides for RPGs. Role Playing Games are one of my favourite genres and are usually varied and stuffed full of things to do.
