Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Summoner 2: Raidou Kuzunoha vs. King Abaddon Review

GameSpot
19 August 2009
  • Excerpt: The Japan of the mid to late 1920s was a unique blend of the old and the new as the island nation struggled to maintain its traditions in the face of rampant modernization. Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Summoner 2: Raidou Kuzunoha vs. King Abaddon uses this turbulent period of history to great effect, crafting a moody and atmospheric world to tell an intriguing and stylish story.
  • Pros: Fun and strategic combat system, Quirky and fascinating hard-boiled detective mystery, Robust devil and weapon fusion systems
  • Cons: Poor pacing makes for uneven gameplay, Awful camera makes exploration confusing

Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Summoner 2: Raidou Kuzunoha vs. King Abaddon

Playstation Illustrated
18 August 2009
  • Excerpt: Atlus is developing a thing for long titles, at least when it comes to Shin Megami Tensei ( SMT ) spin-off titles. Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Summoner 2: Raidou Kuzunoha vs. King Abaddon is the sequel to the cult favorite (and equally long-winded) Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Summoner: Raidou Kuzunoha vs. the Souless Army . Though it isn't much of an advancement over the original game, it is still a solid offering.

Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Summoner 2: Raidou Kuzunoha vs. King Abaddon

Game Revolution
29 June 2009
  • Excerpt: Pyro Jack, I choose you! I don't know who slipped the strong stimulants into the water at Atlus, but it's starting to feel like they're coding new entries to the Shin Megami Tensei series (SMT) overnight. I do believe this is the fourth game just on the PS2 to be released in the past seven hours. And weirdly enough, they all seem to be worth playing . If they can share whatever their secret is, we'd be floating in a sea of awesome for a long, long time!
  • Pros: Absolutely amazing environments, Character style is unique and detailed, Battles are good new/classic mix, . . .though some characters are unoriginal, Doesn't stand out in

The Devil's in the Details

TotalPlayStation.com
28 June 2009
  • Conclusion: Truly one of the last great PS2 RPGs, this is a gorgeous game with an amazing atmosphere. It's not perfect, but when the game is hitting on all cylinders, it's addictive as hell and twice as entertaining.

Expert Review

PSX Extreme
9 June 2009
  • Excerpt: For the hardcore RPG fan, Atlus has become the premier developer in their eyes. Not only have they continued to pump out a large number of niche titles over the past three or four years (while the new PlayStation 3 started slow with the RPGs), but most Atlus games are often of a very high quality. They may appeal to a somewhat small portion of consumers, but you had best believe that said portion is most decidedly loyal.

More than a mouthful

Devil Summoner 2: Raidou Kuzunoha vs. King Abaddon

playmagazine
18 May 2009
  • Excerpt: Devil Summoner: Raidou Kuzunoha vs. The Soulless Army was an interesting departure for Atlus and their Devil Summoner series. Coming from a company typically known for in-depth role-playing sagas, Soulless Army still had MegaTen-style RPG underpinnings, but then contained an action-oriented combat system and more adventure-esque exploration in a project that reminded me of what Square had attempted many years before with Parasite Eve .
