Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance II review (PS2)

HonestGamers
12 June 2010
  • Excerpt: Mordoc illustrates he's smarter than everyone, which proves to be a mistake, as that sort of tomfoolery will DEFINITELY turn your attention towards him. Also, there are a couple of optional areas you can raid for treasure and each character has his or her own specific side quest. All in all, you'll spend a good number of hours killing stuff and collecting treasure.

  • Summary: Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance II is very good, but it's certainly not the greatest Action RPG. With solid gameplay mechanics, a relatively long lifespan and a decent multiplayer mode, it should keep RPG fans who are looking for a more action occupied role playing game for weeks, maybe even months. The audio and visuals work well together, and the intuitive controls and commands keep the pace rolling forward at a steady pace.

Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance 2

Playstation Illustrated

  • Excerpt: Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance 2 uses the same engine as the original, which may be good or bad for some people. The good part is the graphics remain the same and still look nice, but the bad is the camera, which can only be adjusted to two height settings. Closer views would have helped to make this game more playable. As for the special effects, they are still spot on, and the fire looks better than ever.

Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance II

The Armchair Empire

  • Conclusion: Starting up where the first Dark Alliance left off, a cut scene shows the three heroes of that game stepping through a portal after defeating Eldrith the Betrayer only to be surrounded by a large group of demons after which they are taken prisoner by the vampire king, Mordac. From here players will have to choose from five new characters (more on this in a bit) and set out to find out what Mordac is up to.

  • Excerpt: Luckily, carrying and switching between all these weapons is easy as pie. You are allowed to equip three weapons at any given moment, and a quick tap on the D-pad allows you to switch between the three without every going to the item selection screens.

  • Excerpt: Start New Game Load Saved Game Options Credits Something that’s struck me is just how well Baldur’s Gate: Dark Alliance II ‘s menu represents the game as a whole, with its simple and easy to grasp concept, set within a delightfully detailed, elegant background. The vegetation pitches and rolls violently in the wind, the clouds swirling above a distant, menacing tower on a dusty plain.

Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance II

The Next Level

  • Excerpt: The dark action-RPG was born with Diablo, and perfected with Diablo II. And until Blizzard makes another action-RPG, Diablo II is the final word on the PC. This is great for everyone who owns a PC, but what about console owners? Hmm. There was that PSone port of Diablo , and Midway was nice enough to port Gauntlet Legends to everything from the N64 to the Xbox. But an arcade hack-n-slash is hardly an action-RPG.
