Area 51 PS2 Review

Console Obsession
31 May 2010
  • Excerpt: Innovation is much requested, but rarely ever delivered in games, and whilst gaming may still be in its infancy, it’s still old enough that genuine originality can be near impossible to find in the games of today. It’s not as if the industry is lacking brilliant minds, it’s just that potential new ideas are hard to come by.

Area 51

XboxAddict.com
4 May 2007
  • Excerpt: They dont call Xbox the FPS console for nothing. We get more FPSs thrown at us than the Washington D.C. county jail, and that just makes it hard to compete. Had Area 51 been released 6 or 8 months ago, it would have been much more well received then it is today. When you get right down to it, Area 51 is a solid shooter. The gameplay is tight, and the mechanics clean. The story iscomplicated, at best.

Area-51

Playstation Illustrated
29 January 2007
  • Excerpt: Ahh, Friday nights with the family, I remember it so fondly. When I was a youngster it was “TGIF Night,” with classics such as “Full House,” “Family Matters,” and “Step by Step.” But as I got older and the shows got suckier, my mind thirsted for new content. So my family and I turned to “X-Files,” with its paranormal investigations taking us places we had never imagined.

Area 51

Strategy Informer

  • Excerpt: FPS games are coming out almost every other day. With this many, it's hard for one to really shine since most are just long and forgotten in the midst of the marketing madness franchises such as Halo, Doom, or Quake. However, Area 51 seems to be more popular then others coming out. The game still doesn't hold up well as a FPS that your just dieing to spend your hard earned cash for.

  • Excerpt: Midway digs into the classic game grab bag with Area 51 which, like NARC before it, is a total retelling of the light gun games of the mid to late nineties, only this time it’s a first person shooter and an all right one at that.

Video Game talk

  • Conclusion: The graphics are great even though some of the designs could have used some sprucing up and aside from some poor voice acting and little music, the audio does its job well. Ultimately though there isnt much to keep you coming back to this game and after youve beaten it, and only the multiplayer modes will hold your interest. Being the diehard FPS fan that I am, stands out amidst the sea of mediocrity that plagues the genre.

  • Summary: Area 51 may not bring anything new to the table, but the games that it pays homage to are the best. If you're looking for a no brain, blastathon, it's worth a look.
