All Star Baseball 2004 (PS2)

  • Conclusion: When I first saw this game I really wanted to like it. I kept playing it in hopes that it would get better. I love the stadiums. I love the look of the game. I especially love how Akklaim made a point of paying homage to baseball's storied past. Unfortunately, the gameplay gives you something that is in the neighborhood of real baseball, but not really on the same block. It's sort of ironic that All-Star Baseball features Derek Jeter.

  • Excerpt: Remember back on the N64 when All-Star Baseball was amazing? Every aspect about it was based on the real game, but was still fun. Now, the All-Star Baseball series is terrible. Ever since they made the jump to the next-gen university, they just haven’t seemed to be on track with other games. Can the 2004 version offer a new hope to this franchise or will it stink up the market even more?

  • Excerpt: The first thing you'll notice is the impressive new front-end. In terms of presentation, this year's version of ASB is certainly the champ. The menus are viewed through a grainy filter that makes it feel like you are watching a documentary about the glory days of baseball. Navigating them, with the theme song to the movie The Natural playing in the background, you feel like you've accessed a grand archive of MLB's glorious history.

  • Excerpt: Acclaim's All-Star Baseball series certainly has a fair share of fans, and at first glance, it's easy to see why. The visuals have been impressive for the most part and there have been enough nice touches added to the overall presentation that it feels like there's a nice coat of polish all around.

  • Conclusion: We found that ASB2003 really comes into its own when 2 (or more) players compete - the panicky errors in pitching, running and fielding that only a human opponent would make bring the game to life, and made it much more fun.
  • Pros: Detailed and realistic., Good control system., All the names you could want and the ability to trade and update rosters as well., The commentary is excellent.
  • Cons: It's not an easy game to get into initially., Probably only for fans of the real thing.
