Namco got a bullseye on this one.

Nick Slavin, MobyGames
29 July 2009
  • Conclusion: Ace Combat 04 is a true war game with all the action commonly seen and also the emotion rarely seen in these types of games. Project Aces once again takes the flight genre in a new direction that will hopefully continue on.
  • Pros: Although dated, Ace Combat 04 can hold its own as (in my opinion) the best title in the best air combat series. It takes a some doing to merit this, but I don't exaggerate when I say that Shattered Skies has it all.
  • Cons: The main problem I see is that for players with some skill, the 18 mission campaign is over way too fast. There is however, 2 player co-op mode and score attack challenges.

Excellent jet fighter game with a touching story.

Big John WV, MobyGames
26 September 2008
  • Conclusion: All in all,
  • Pros: I didn't play much flying games back in the day (unless you count EA's Strike Series), so the first time I saw this game I was a little curious and was really shocked on how well this game was.
  • Cons: Well, one thing did bother me, it was that this game felt...soft. It's kinda hard to explain, it's almost like there was a soft feel to it, the graphics are bright making it almost seem like it was a light-hearted event. Even the explosions didn't seem real, back then they were pretty well done, but still had that weird look to them.

Challenging, not for dummies.

John P. Thiel "John P. Thiel", Amazon
20 December 2005
  • Summary: In scanning over the reviews, I can't believe no one mentioned that you basically work your way up to better planes and equiptment in this game and what that really means. In my view, this is one of the best aspects of the game because, at first, you're pretty much of a sitting duck in the crappy plane and weaponry you start out with; but then when you've kicked butt to the point that you have a greater wealth of choices in aircraft capability it starts getting as if you...

endless fun, infinite replayability

Igor Borovikov "Igor B.", Amazon
10 December 2004
  • Summary: It's one of my favorite PS2 games. I've been looking for good PS2 flight sim and this one is a jewel. Controls are simple and well taught in a series of tutorials. The difficulty is ramping up very gently. In the later missions different objectives and in-flight mission updates encourage you to try different planes to complete the entire mission. The planes are quite different and picking the right one could be crucial.

Awesome, but missing something - random mission generator!

Thomas Hochmann, Amazon
2 December 2004
  • Summary: I love air combat games, pure and simple. Shooting down bombers, dropping payloads on ground targets, and dogfighting with jets - these are the core ingredients to a good flight action game, and Ace Combat 4 has plenty of each. It's not perfect, but there is a lot to enjoy. First, the good stuff: there's a nice selection of fighter jets to fly in this game, and you acquire them rapidly enough to keep it interesting.

Games like this make me say I'm a "gamer" with a proud tone in my voice

MAT, MobyGames
10 November 2004
  • Conclusion: Namco
  • Pros: This game is simply beautiful. It has been a long time since a game made such an impact upon me, and I've played so many I thought I've seen it all. Still, it is times like these that make a difference in my life and start appreciating the whole gaming industry even more. First to say, I am not keen on simulations of any kind, and it is rare occasion I even try to play such a game. But lately, I got really interested in this game's sequel, and
  • Cons: I was touched too much by this game's story and the way it was being told to make any points against it, cut me too deep to recoil.

Don't Be Fooled By Its Price: You won't be disappointed!

C. Kim, Amazon
31 May 2004
  • Summary: I personally do not buy 'flight simulator' games because I am not simply interested in them. However, I gave Ace Combat 4 a try simply because it was cheap. Frankly I just don't like these 3D 'shooter' games; I'm a hardcore 2D shooter fan- however... Wow... this game just blew me away since from early missions to the very AWESOME last mission... I didn't expect much from this 'flight simulator'... This game literally reminded me of Ridge Racer R4 after finishing it.

Super addictive, non-stop gameplay

Jobe, Amazon
17 January 2004
  • Summary: I've looked for years for a good flight simulation game for my Playstation/Playstation 2 console so when I bought Ace Combat I hoped it would be good. The truth is, it was awesome. From training sequences to the final heart pounding mission this game is full of high profile action and adventure. When I started playing it I couldn't put it down.

Greatest Flight Sim Game I've played yet!

B. A. Jones "JoBob_55", Amazon
13 December 2003
  • Summary: I'm not going to go into much detail because the other reviews have it covered with the exception that if you're a flight sim fan, this game is a MUST HAVE. Never have I seen a console flight sim so realistic in putting the player behind the cockpit. Missions get more and more challenging as you go along; extra functions and fighters are unlocked after you beat the game, adding replay value.
