NHL FaceOff 2001

Playstation Illustrated

  • Excerpt: I have to say that NHL FaceOff 2001 looks great. Each player, rink, and puck has vivid imagery and great detail. Okay, maybe I'm stretching it a bit, but it does look good. Hey, when the skaters leave lines in the ice, I'm impressed. I guess it doesn't take much, huh? That aside, I still think the game looks good. It runs a little slow, but it looks great. Even the sound effects, music and play-by-play are on the good side.

NHL FaceOff 2001

  • Conclusion: Coming from 989 Sports, basically a second-party developer for Sony, this game is an insult and a slap in the face to the early adopters of the PS2. Never have I seen a game with such poor presentation values – there are much better looking PSX games. Gameplay-wise, if forced, I'd still play this trollop over Fifa 2001 (the lesser of two punishments), but at least EA Sports gave a rock solid effort with Fifa's presentation.

  • Excerpt: Hockey games have always had a place in my heart. Ever since those NHL games on Super Nintendo and all the way to the recent NHL 2K on Dreamcast, I've always enjoyed the great hockey games and I still do. With the aging of the PS, the upcoming release of PS2, and NHL 2K on the Dreamcast, I wonder if another great hockey game will come along on our Playstation? EA Sports has the NHL franchise and 989 Sports has their Faceoff series.
