Review: Metal Gear Solid (PS1)

Ani-Gamers
17 June 2008
  • Excerpt: There are some games that simply define not only their consoles, but their console generations as well. One of those games is Hideo Kojima's master work, Metal Gear Solid , for the Playstation. The story follows a special agent code-named "Solid Snake," assigned to infiltrate a military facility off the coast of Alaska that has been taken over by terrorists. The group in control of the island is made up of rogue members of FOXHOUND, Snake's former unit.

Metal Gear Solid: VR Missions – Second Opinion

GameCritics.com
7 December 2003
  • Excerpt: Holy Crap! It's amazing what passes for a game these days! Transplant the body of Snake into a puzzle game like Boxxle or Chip's Challenge and you might get some idea of what it is like to play VR Missions . Dale wasn't kidding when he said he felt like a lab rat in a maze. I couldn't shake the feeling that I was the subject of a sick experiment to see if I could be 'conditioned' to tolerate poor excuses for a gaming like this one.

  • Excerpt: Every character is believable and is played with emotion and feeling that was unheard of in the industry prior to the game's release (at least in such a large scale way). Even the smaller characters, such as the Genome soldiers that you'll face a bulk of the time in the game, are given their own dialog--though, the extent of it is, "Whos foot prints are these?" What was that noise?" and, "It's just a box," but it's done well none-the-less.

  • Summary: Overall, this game does the one thing I love the most, and that is it's something new! New gameplay, ideas, and concepts are given here in full. The graphics are nice touch not great, but not bad either. The SoundFX shine combined with the Dual Shock. And you won't be let down; this game has a Plot. Oh my god you say, well I'm not lying, the big plot and hours of cut scenes to prove it too.

  • Excerpt: No doubt about but Metal Gear Solid is probabbly one of the greatest games ever created. The gameplay is spectacular, sound is extrodinary, and the graphics are to die for. Although people say the game is not long, they are kind of right (if you skip everything, skip all of the scenes, don't care about what there talking about, don't fell like getting all of the secrets etc.) Yeah so if you do that you skipped the whole game.

Metal Gear Solid

Playstation Illustrated
17 January 2002
  • Excerpt: Metal Gear Solid is an EXCELLENT game. It is presented with such well-balanced cinematic quality that the overall experience is much greater than the sum of its graphics and sound components. The faces of the characters are not well defined, but this appears to be done as a style of design. Rather than attempting to look extremely realistic, Konami has achieved a moody, believable atmosphere in which the drama can fully unfold.
