Not such a gnarly game after all....
6 June 2002
Excerpt: Mat Hoffman’s BMX was delayed for over six months when it was set to be released, with many rumours of a lacklustre game. So, what exactly does the long awaited relative to the immensely popular Tony Hawks games have in store for us? In my opinion, it doesn’t really offer much at all. If, like me, you were expecting something special, then prepare to be disappointed. This game had the potential to be good.
Excerpt: Mat Hoffman Pro BMX is the latest biking game to grace the PS1, and it does so in style. Activision have done themselves justice with this amazing game, and from the opening video sequence, you will notice the close resemblance to Tony Hawk's Pro Skater. Similarities are noticeable immediately. Like THPS, Hoffman plays like a dream, and the graphics are amazing. If we had to find a new THPS, this would undoubtedly be it, hands down.
Excerpt: I got this game about a week ago from Blockbuster loving Tony Hawk's Pro Skater so much I thought this would be as good. It starts off really bad. I played on this for about a minute and then turned it off. It was rubbish. But then later in the week I thought, I'll give it another chance, see how good it really is. It's fantastic. This game is as addictive as Tony Hawks but the gameplay is completly different. If you've mastered Tony Hawks try this, you cant go wrong.
Excerpt: The first thing that hit me when I played Mat Hoffmans Pro BMX is the incredible similarity to both Tony Hawks and Tony Hawks 2. Is this a bad thing? HELL NO! Tony Hawks 1 and 2 are two of the best games I’ve played on any console. I may be a dedicated Ninty but that doesn’t mean that I don’t enjoy great games on other platforms. MHP BMX is in fact made by the same people who made Tony Hawks. The same engine is used and the game plays almost exactly the same.
Excerpt: Mat Hoffman pro BMX has got to be one of my favourite games that’s out there today. Anyone who has played Tony Hawks Pro Skateboarding in the past will know that the graphics are immense, the same engine and park styles are used in Mat Hoffman. All that has been done is that a new character and equipment replaces the skateboarder and his board.
Excerpt: This is one good game. Sure, it's not as good as Tony Hawk's but it comes pretty damn close. It is develpoed and published by the same staff and the graphics engine is the same, and the gamplay engine both come from the same direction too. This game also has the same skate park editor. The scoring system will also come incredibly fimiliar when you play. There are 10 levels for you to enjoy and about 12 characters.
Excerpt: Mat Hoffman's pro bmx is a great game especially if you like any of the tony hawk's games. It is made by the same people that make Tony Hawks pro skater so the game is vey similar, apart from you are on a bmx (obviously). The idea of the game is also the same instead of colecting tapes (see my opinion on Tony Haw's) you colllect covers (off a magazine). More cover unlock new bikes, parts and levels.
Excerpt: Only playing on a demo of mat hoffmans this review may be a bit sketchy. Mat Hoffmans is no were near a great game. It's enjoyable. Yet the ease of pulling of tricks like a '900 backfilp' and a 'toothpick grind tono hander to icepick grind to no footer to double peg grind to nothing plus bigrail (on a rather smaal pointless rail)' just brings the whole levle of gameplay down. Yeah it's great if you want a muck about with your mates but for a bmx sim it's pathetic.
