Excerpt: I know it’s not a good idea to play a sequel without playing the original, but that’s exactly what I did with Grandia II . A year after loving the sequel I finally tried out the first game. I wasn’t really sure what to expect with Grandia , but what I got was a simple storyline, an easy difficulty, and the same exciting battle system. In short: the perfect RPG for beginners and an amusing diversion for everyone else.
Excerpt: When I was a little tyke growing up in Barbados, my family didn't have much money and we didn't have amenities like TV and videogames, so for fun, kids did something now perceived as nearly unthinkable; we played outside! Luckily for me (and most other kids on the island), the beach was only a few minutes away and there were countless hilly fields and rocky areas for us to explore and adventure.
Excerpt: No RPG fan, no matter how luxuriously free from responsibility, has played and beaten every RPG. Even taking on just one subset of RPGs (JRPGs published in North America), the statement holds true. Any one person's judgment of one RPG is colored by what they have played, and there may be "holes" in their critiques created by missing out on some other landmark RPG. Case in point: me. I've beaten well over one hundred RPGs in my short time on earth.
Excerpt: Unfortunately, the graphics are the weak point of Grandia . Fortunately, they're pretty much the only weak point of the game. The character graphics consist of highly-pixellated sprites moving around in a 3D world, a la Xenogears , only a good bit more organic. The problem is that it's also a good bit more seamy. As in you can see the lines that define pretty much every large polygon in this game. Distracting, but bearable.
Excerpt: At an attempt to recreate a Sega Saturn classic, Sony acquires the publishing rights to Grandia, while Game Arts develops it. If you haven't heard of Grandia it's a Sega Saturn title that never made here to the US. Apparently because of the Saturn's tragic death. Many Japanese critics hailed Grandia as the only RPG that can be compared to Final Fantasy 7. Grandia was released about 2 years ago (I think), and was Saturn's savior in Japan.
