Gran Turismo (PS): The game that revolutionised driving simulators...Viva Gran ...
25 March 2011
Summary: Before GT, driving simulators had terrible problems, either the handling and gameplay was great but the graphics were lame, or the graphics were great, but the car handled like ou had an elephant sitting on the hood.GT is the pinnacle of racing sims and there are 5 main games in the franchise with a concept version too.
Pros: Good graphics at the time, great soundtrack and fantastic amount of features
Cons: Rendering looks a little dated, can be bewildering for people that just want a quick game
Summary: I'll never forget the first time I saw someone playing Gran Turismo. I was in a toy shop at the time and to say I was blown away wouldn't even start to cover it. I didn't even own a Playstation at the time but I left that shop with cosole and game in my possession, itching to get home and plug it in.
Summary: There is a pattern that many of modern game franchises original games will still have re-playability long after the many sequels. Gran Turismo is no exception. I picked this classic up for 99p and didn't expect it to be as good as i remembered it to be back in the day, the real driving simulator can only be so realistic on the Playstation 1's outdated graphics.
Pros: The racing is still as fun as it always was
Cons: Doesnt live up to its modern brothers but the nostalgia is the appeal
Excerpt: "Gran turismo: the real driving simulator gets you into to the great world of cars and fabulous sports car racing. Complete fantastic levels to achieve various driving liscenses and a variety of driving awards, and once you have your liscence no one can stop you. Or if you cant be bothered to get your liscense and just want to go wild, then switch to the fantastic arcade mode, choose your car abd rah for real. learn the brakes, gears and speeding and ...
Summary: Back in 1998, the popular racing-game genre was still waiting for it's first true classic to arrive. Role-playing gamers had the delights of Final Fantasy VII, first-person shoot 'em up fans had had it easy for years thanks to Doom, beat 'em up connoisseurs now had the choice of Street Fighter AND Tekken and yet strangely, there had yet to be a racing game with a real 'wow' factor.
Pros: So many cars!, Excellent Handling, Huge Lifespan
Excerpt: "...the arcades, and previous to Gran Turismo's release, Ridge Racer and V-Rally on PSOne. Therefore it surprises me greatly that GT was the first of its kind to catch the eye of the collective gaming nation and make a massive impact. So, back to 1998 again and a time when games still came on CD's and there were people other than myself still playing PSOne (sigh, how times have changed), Sony's own self-proclaimed 'real driving simulator' was revving ...
Pros: Stunning looks, large selection of cars, great handling, excellent design
Summary: The Gran Turismo series may be in it's third edition, but if you are a bargain hunter looking to snap up a quality game at a knock-down price, then you won't go far wrong by snapping up the original Gran Turismo game from your local video game retailer. Gran Turismo was released with the original Playstation 1, yet even today, it remains a quality, highly entertaining video game.
Excerpt: "Gran Turismo, you must have heard of this game by now, if you are into Playstation at all. A game that was universally praised by every single Playstation magazine of note. So is it any good, well of course it is!!! The big selling point was the fact that you could drive anyone of 166 cars from 11 different manufacturers. Also you could upgrade individual parts from each of these cards. Though these make no difference to the way the cars look ...
Pros: Fast, graphically decent for the platform it is on, Great soundtrack
Cons: Graphically a little weak nowadays but that is being nit picky (I have rated Excellent though due to them being good for the platform they are on) .
Summary: Impatient for the release of Gran Turismo 3 on PS2? Why worry, when the original still more than holds its own after three years! I have recently rediscovered this game, having put it to one side a couple of years ago and have found myself completely hooked again. Gran Turismo allows you to play an ongoing 'campaign' style game, entering races as you please and spending prize money on new cars (of which there are hundreds) or on upgrades for the cars you currently own.
Excerpt: "...played for the playstation was Gran Turismo. Ridge Racer had come and gone and this was the best the playstation could probably push itself to since a new hardware board was used to monitor the playstation around this time and Gran Turismo pushed about 92% of the playstations power on to the screen with this now platinum title. Gran Turismo has quite a complex structure. Most games you simply choose a car, choose a track, or a mode and race. Simple. ...
