Blast from the Past

Jeremy Michael Gallen, RPGamer
1 March 2010
  • Excerpt: Princess Garnet of Alexandria is celebrating her sixteenth birthday, with the Tantalus Theater Troupe arriving to put on a show, during which they kidnap her, sparking a long chain of events where her mother, Queen Brahne, wishes to take back her daughter by force. Squaresoft's Final Fantasy IX was the last numbered installment of the series to appear on the Sony Playstation, marking a return to the franchise's roots in many respects.

Back to the Basics

Derek 'Roku' Cavin, RPGamer
1 March 2010
  • Excerpt: Thanks to a lack of FFVIII's overall sucess, Final Fantasy IX returns to the roots of the series for some classic gameplay. Battles are similar to those found in FFVII and the storyline has returned to dealing with the crystal of early FF games. FFIX follows yet another male thief and female summoner as they attempt to set right the wrongs in the world after being pulled into a large adventure.

Throwback

JuMeSyn, RPGamer

  • Excerpt: Every rule must have an exception to prove it. The exception to my rule (which need not be stated here) is Final Fantasy IX. I came to play this title thanks to a generous co-worker’s loaned PS2 one summer, and had just enough time to delve deeply into it before the machine vanished once again. Certainly the time was worthwhile, and Final Fantasy IX is quite easily recommended to anyone seeking a quality Final Fantasy with more nods to the older style of the series.

  • Summary: I seem to like this game a lot more than most other people. It seems that no one really hates it... but apparently no one likes it enough to mention it either (as opposed to Final Fantasy VII, which finds it's way in almost any conversation including Squaresoft). One thing I liked about this game was it's midieval appearance. The plot was good, no less than I'd expect from the series. You never know what will come next in this game.

Final Fantasy IX: the last one of a whole generation

123chris1..., Ciao
6 July 2012
  • Excerpt: Final Fantasy IX was conceived and produced by Hironobu Sakaguchi with the help of Squaresoft team. It is the last game of the series for the PSX platform. It is compossed of 4 individual discs. The story itself has a climate of Kings and Kingdoms ambient with, of course like happens in all the previous FF games, a touch of fantasy.
  • Pros: Great and enthusiastic story, a lot of mini - games
  • Cons: No voices, but since it is a PSX game, it's compreensible

A Worthy Throwback

SirJoseph, Ciao
8 March 2012
  • Excerpt: So ends the trend in the series of renowned dialogue and compelling story telling.. The last of the single digits, predecessor to 10 which finally took on voice acting, remains somewhat hidden away from many fans who should know better. Final Fantasy IX must have had heaps of pressure on it considering it followed the flagship of the PS1, the massive success that is VII and an unfortunately lesser loved VIII.
  • Pros: Fmv's, Longevity, Storyline, Characters, Music
  • Cons: Minimal Sidequests

  • Excerpt: Final Fantasy IX is the ninth instalment of the Final Fantasy series made by Square Enix (Squaresoft when the game was released). The game was released on Playstation 1 and had new features, such as the Active Time Event (players could watch clips of what was happening with the other characters in the story), and Mognet.
  • Pros: Excellent storyline and gameplay
  • Cons: Slightly blocky graphics at time, but that is to be expected !

  • Excerpt: Final fantasy nine is fantastic and also something different from the final fantasy team. In this installment the makers of final fantasy decided to make there worlds and charecters more cartoony than realistic as in ff8 although it doesnt sound great it works very well with the invention of super charecters like viv.The story is about a rougue who has a lion like tail,he kidnaps a more than willing princess which starts him on a adventure to save the world of gaea and...
  • Pros: Its beautifully animated
  • Cons: none
