Demolition Racer opted to have generic, stereotypical classes of vehicles.
Excerpt: Infogrames and Pitbull looked back at Destruction Derby and decided to produce their own version of a demolition car combat game. The goal was to implement the aggressive gameplay into a Playstation title that works well all around. Demolition Racer added more of the racing aspect to the game and kept the original arena battle as a separate part of the game.
