Need for Speed: Rivals

Thunderbolt Games
10 January 2014
  • Excerpt: Need for Speed: Rivals is the Dark Souls of racing games. Now I know what you’re thinking but just bear with me for a moment. In the fictional open-world of Redview County illegal street racing is king and the cops fight back with supercars of their own. Playing as a racer you accumulate “speed points” as you compete in various events, escape the attention of an unrelenting police force and cruise the world.

Review Supplemental: Need For Speed: Rivals (PS4)

  • Conclusion: This means that if you already have a PS4, then you’ll probably buy it on that system anyways. For those of you that have a PS3, plan getting a PS4 in the future, and aren’t sure if you should wait or not, the answer is that if you care about graphics, then wait. There is no real difference in the gameplay between the two versions, especially when the frame-rate is locked at 30 fps, so if you don’t care about graphics, then go ahead and grab it on PS3.
  • Pros: +Looks Beautiful, +Native 1080p
  • Cons: -FPS locked at 30, -No Difference from PS3

Need for Speed: Rivals

Digital Chumps
17 November 2013
  • Conclusion: Rivals serves as a refinement of ideas and principles established over the last three iterations of Need for Speed. This can lead to a feeling of sameness bleeding over Rival’s rough edges while also serving as a condensed interpretation of the series' better ideas. In this regard Rivals acts as a natural step forward, lessons learned and amended properly.

Review – Need for Speed: Rivals (PlayStation 4)

What Mobile
27 December 2013
  • Excerpt: Last time we did this, Need for Speed was in a very different place. I’m talking about console launches. Remember the name Need for Speed: Carbon? You probably don’t – it was a meagre effort that limped onto PS3 and 360 over half a decade ago and was pretty typical of a series that, at the time, had grown stale.
  • Pros: Rock-solid racing mechanics, Brilliant risk mechanic, Innovative online
  • Cons: Needs more variety, Racing as cops is bland, Doesn't push the series

Review: Need for Speed Rivals is a fine debut for Ghost Games

CVG
18 November 2013
  • Summary: Imagine, if your mind will conceive it, the debauched threeway coupling of Hot Pursuit, High Stakes and Most Wanted while all high on Burnout Paradise, and you're about up to speed with Need for Speed: Rivals - the twentieth incarnation of EA's seminal, but slightly off form racing series.
  • Pros: Sublime visuals, Redview County is wonderfully mapped, AllDrive, when it works, is excellent
  • Cons: Woeful plot, EA's servers are troublesome at launch, Racer campaign can be frustrating
