XCOM: Enemy Unknown

destructoid.com
2 September 2013
  • Summary: I was pretty blown away by Firaxis Games' re-imagining of the X-COM universe last year in XCOM: Enemy Unknown . So blown away in fact that it was my second choice for Game of the Year -- and this is coming from a fan of the '90s series. I loved the emotional thrill of deciding the fate of the world, and living with the sorrow of war, defeat, and death -- it comes naturally in Enemy Unknown , and is all the better for it.

XCOM: Enemy Unknown review

GamesRadar
20 December 2012
  • Excerpt: Firaxis’ reboot of XCOM, Enemy Unknown, is one of the most logically sound alien invasion games you’ll ever play. It accepts that if extraterrestrials were to invade the earth, it wouldn’t be a single soldier in a suit of armor that fights them off by blasting his way through their defenses.
  • Pros: Satisfying, difficult tactical battles, The lengthy campaign and robust multiplayer, Incredibly deep customization
  • Cons: Camera and control problems, Random difficulty spikes, Watching your loved ones die to incredibly bad luck

XCOM Offers Modern, Classic Gameplay

GIN
5 November 2012
  • Excerpt: The original X-COM: UFO Defense is one of my favorite games of all time. For a game released back in 1994, it had more depth than any title I experienced before. It had the resource management and productivity of Civilization combined with the turn based tactical combat of Jagged Alliance. Add to that a level of customization that allowed players to make up their own stories, and it was the markings of a winner.

Review: XCOM Enemy Unknown

newgamernation.com
1 November 2012
  • Conclusion: XCOM Enemy Unknown is a very enjoyable strategy game, and is a definite buy for any major strategy fan. Graphically, the game is beautifully stylized and has some great kill-shot moments. The game offers enough variety to the maps and missions that the player shouldn’t get bored easily. The only notable issue is that movement on the maps can sometimes be difficult, and often requires rotating the camera to get a better view.

XCOM: Enemy Unknown PS3 Review

Console Obsession
21 October 2012
  • Excerpt: Real Time Strategy games have become somewhat of a rarity these days, seemingly put aside in favour of more action focused experiences. Take XCOM itself for instance, which was set to get a run and gun FPS re-imagining until an outpouring of complaints from fans resulted in the developer attempting to make a squad based shooter that is more of a cerebral and authentic XCOM game instead.

XCOM: Enemy Unknown Review (PS3)

PlayStation LifeStyle
11 October 2012
  • Summary: You are Earth’s first and last line of defense against an alien threat. The fate of the world is in your hands, Commander.
  • Pros: Very intuitive interface and design that makes issuing commands to troops or base building very easy., Incredibly deep strategic element to the gameplay., Pretty well written even if the story is a bit boilerplate., Rewards your patience., The tension created by having to make difficult choices will have you on the edge of your seat and is well executed., There's just so much to do!
  • Cons: There are some minor line of sight and framerate issues., There's a bit too much asset recycling within the maps., The AI gets to cheat a bit which can make the extreme lethality of combat that much worse., Multiplayer matches are decided at the point of contact.

  • Summary: XCOM: Enemy Unknown is an expertly crafted strategy game that improves on the original in every way. It's a cinematic treat that is accessible enough for gamers of all experience. Best of all, it's not a bore. With more than 70 missions and a competitive two-player mode, XCOM is a high water mark for 2012! This product was submitted by the publisher for review. As a rule, Defunct Games does not review games we spent money on.

XCOM: Enemy Unknown PS3 Review

About.com
9 October 2012
  • Conclusion: XCOM: Enemy Unknown Image © 2K Games If you’re reading a video game review, you almost certainly have played an action game about the day the Earth stood still. Games in which we have to take down forces that have traveled light years to turn us into interstellar slaves are common. And yet, unless you’re a fan of the 1993 original, you’ve probably never played a game like “XCOM: Enemy Unknown.” It’s not just action. It’s not just strategy.
