Smackdown vs. Raw 2009

Hardcore Gamer

  • Summary: Remember back in the glory days of your youth when you and a few friends would recklessly re-enact moves you saw in the WWF ring that Saturday morning? That’s right, it was WWF back then. You’d work on your entrances, maybe pick out your favorite House of Pain tune to jump around to on your trampoline as you messily tried to dropkick your fat friend. Well those days are back in virtual form, eliminating the dangers of broken elbows from trampoline mishaps (we hope).

WWE SmackDown vs. Raw 2009

  • Summary: Smackdown v. Raw 2009 is actually pretty fun. I haven’t picked up a wrestling title in years, yet this one managed to sneak its way into heavy gaming rotation. The Road to Wrestlemania mode is great, although I wish they had more storylines to play through. Career Mode is boring and feels wasted. Wrestling fans probably already have this one. Other people may want to give this game a look.
  • Pros: Fun multiplayer, Good variety of matches, Road to Wrestlemania mode
  • Cons: No old-timers, Control scheme isn't explained well and turns into button mashing, Career Mode is boring and bland, especially when compared to the Road to Wrestlemania mode

WWE SmackDown! VS. RAW 2009

21 November 2008
  • Excerpt: THQ’s Smackdown series has been laying it down ever since the days of Blasto, but lately the franchise has gone through some hard knocks. Uninspired yearly releases glittered with marginal improvements haven’t exactly been kind to the brand, and neither has the engine, which has aged about as well as Hulk Hogan. Attempting to prove the series isn’t down for the count just yet, Smackdown vs Raw 2009 enters the ring with a toned-up list of features.

  • Excerpt: The WWE SmackDown franchise has become a staple for THQ ever since they've gained the WWE license from the, now defunct, Acclaim. From the start, the series has been a smash hit and a financial success for THQ. So it's no surprise that nearly every single year following the first release has been a new SmackDown game (the first two SmackDowns both came out in 2000, in fact). So now, we're at the tenth game, a follow-up to last year's absurdly flawed and poor effort.

WWE SmackDown vs. Raw 2009 (PS3)

Crispy Gamer

  • Excerpt: Wrestling wasn't always SmackDown vs. Raw. In fact, it's been a sport since the 9th century B.C., since the mid-Iron Age, when the massive, 74,000-verse "Mahabharata" was written in India. As one gruesome tale from that ancient tome goes, the strong, wrathful Bhima was more powerful than 10,000 elephants. He was pitted against angry king Jarasandha in a throw-down so ugly, so nasty, it certainly didn't last a mere 10 minutes like some of the WrestleMania bouts.

WWE SmackDown vs. Raw 2009 Review

8 November 2008
  • Excerpt: Earlier in the year a fellow video game journalist remarked to me that the WWE SmackDown vs. Raw series was its own genre. It's not a fighting game series, like Street Fighter or Tekken, and it's not a sports game series, like FIFA or PES. Indeed SDvR cannot be compared to any other title on the market, so unique is its gameplay. Well, that may have been the case in years gone by, but this year things are different.

  • Excerpt: Like ‘em or not, when it comes to wrestling, the WWE is pretty much the only game in town. Despite some notable competition in the past from Ted Turner’s WCW (and to a lesser extent, the far trashier ECW, which almost singlehandedly introduced the far bloodier, more violent and dangerous “hardcore” wrestling variant since adopted by all venues of the sport), these brands (and their general managers) have since been absorbed into the WWE machine, leaving TNA as the...
