Viking: Battle For Asgard Review

VideoGamer.com
21 January 2009
  • Excerpt: Viking: Battle for Asgard doesn't sell itself all that well. The opening few minutes are packed with plenty of walking, talking and collecting, but not a whole lot of action - something pretty high on your list of expectations when you boot up an 18-rated game with a dual weapon-wielding Viking on the front cover. It feels very much like a shinier, less ambitious version of Fable, but then you actually start to fight.

VIKING: Battle For Asgard

  • Excerpt: The olden days were bad times for some. Especially for those whose Gods are looking to engage in an all out war that spills over onto the mortal coil. And especially for those who lived in places that were really, really cold. Unfortunately for the inhabitants of Viking: Battle for Asgard, both things apply. Yes, things have been getting a bit heated up in Asgard.

  • Conclusion: Hack and slash games are fun, but not this one. This game isn’t the worst thing Sega has brought out so a rental should be alight. Buying this game without much knowledge on it? Don’t do it.

Viking: Battle for Asgard

Auracore MediaWorks

  • Summary: Chopping people to little pieces has never gotten so repetitive.
  • Pros: Simple to learn yet hard to master combat system; stealth kills add nicely to the mix; it has Vikings; the mass battles are a heck of a lot of fun; calling down dragons to attack your foes.
  • Cons: Numerous glitches give the game an unfinished feel; almost total dearth of music and limited voice acting; the story makes less sense as you play through the game; gets too repetitive too quickly; plenty of slowdown during mass battles.

Viking: Battle For Asgard

AV Club
14 April 2008
  • Conclusion: The biggest slight to Scandinavians since they gave Leif Ericson's day to Columbus.
  • Pros: Sneaking through an enemy encampment and stabbing soldiers from the shadows is nerve-wracking, until you realize there's one good path to your goal—and almost nobody's guarding it.
  • Cons: The mindless action lends itself to fast bloodshed, yet many of your enemies carry shields which take several hits to destroy.

  • Excerpt: Asgard is in flames It’s not common to see a game’s plot based on Norse mythology. Of course, there were a few touch-and-go affairs such as Lost Vikings or the more recent Age of Mythology that offered a Scandinavian army. Thus, having an action-adventure that draws its main plot and characters from that specific subject is at least intriguing.
  • Pros: Intuitide interface, good hack and slash gameplay, compelling story.
  • Cons: Sound is in dire need of help, a few camera issues, lack of character customization.

  • Excerpt: They don’t quite as high in popularity polls as pirates and ninjas, but Vikings can definitely hold their own when it comes to killing. So how do they fair in Creative Assembly’s newest crack at console action, Viking: Battle for Asgard? Setting the stage for massive amounts of Viking bloodshed, Freya and Hel have started up the ultimate sexy Norse goddess girl-fight, dragging the entire world into a bloody battle for freedom.

  • Summary: A game that brings back some great memories, at the expense of reminding us that the Halo experience will never be the same as it used to be 10 years ago.
