Vandal Hearts: Flames of Judgment (PS3)

ccgr.org
26 June 2010
  • Excerpt: Strong Points: Gameplay is smooth; character design is decent; game length is just right; it wasn\'t stereotypically slow like most tactical RPGs Weak Points: Cut scenes aren’t very pleasing on the eyes; the game doesn’t explain all of the game mechanics very well; feels slightly repetitious Moral Warnings: You’re killing people; there is some minor blood squirting when enemies die; a little bit of foul language
  • Pros: Gameplay is smooth; character design is decent; game length is just right; it wasn\'t stereotypically slow like most tactical RPGs
  • Cons: Cut scenes aren’t very pleasing on the eyes; the game doesn’t explain all of the game mechanics very well; feels slightly repetitious

Vandal Hearts: Flames of Judgment Review

VideoGamer.com
13 April 2010
  • Excerpt: It wasn't long ago that the strategy RPG was on the verge of death, choking on its clichéd plots and stale gameplay mechanics and desperately trying to cling onto survival. Noticing that the genre was in danger, strategy specialists Nippon Ichi gave it a firm slap on the back, filling it with life and promise once more. The ensuing Disgaea series offered team customisation, stylish anime character designs and an absurd level of depth.

Vandal Hearts: Flames of Judgment

Playstation Illustrated
8 March 2010
  • Excerpt: Vandal Hearts: Flames of Judgment is a great example of the importance of unity between game visuals and theme. The game's plot and gameplay both trend towards the more serious side, while the visuals look like they came right out of a game aimed at kids. For whatever reason, Hijinx/Konami opted for an art style that looks like it came from Cartoon Network's Marvel Superhero Squad . Big heads, squat bodies... the whole thing.

Vandal Hearts: Flames of Judgment

Digital Chumps
12 February 2010
  • Excerpt: Vandal Hearts was first released on the Playstation in the mid 90s, and was well received. A sequel was made and enjoyed by many, but the series has been quiet until a prequel was just recently released on XBLA and the PSN. Vandal Hearts: Flames of Judgment is a competent and traditional strategy RPG that should appease fans of the genre who aren't expecting anything more than a typical gameplay experience.

  • Conclusion: You get exactly what you expect in Vandal Hearts: Flames of Judgment. This stereotypical tactical RPG might not offer anything pioneering, but it does provide a solid retro experience for anyone who wants to enjoy a fresh entry in a genre that isn't seen very often these days on current-gen consoles.
  • Pros: Solid tactical RPG gaming, Involving story with realistic characters, Intuitive controls.
  • Cons: Fairly easy and relatively short, Off-putting graphics, Character development system runs on rails.

Expert Review

GameSpot
28 January 2010
  • Summary: Flames of Judgment is the first game to be released in the Vandal Hearts turn-based strategy role-playing game series for a full decade. Hijinx Studios has done a reasonably good job with this resurrection job for the Xbox Live Arcade (1,200 points) and PlayStation Network ($14.99), too, although there is only so much that the developer could do with such a dated concept.
  • Pros: Solid tactical RPG gaming, Involving story with realistic characters, Intuitive controls
  • Cons: Fairly easy and relatively short, Off-putting graphics, Character development system runs on rails

Vandal Hearts: Flames of Judgment (PS3) - Review

VGChartz
25 January 2010
  • Excerpt: Vandal Hearts is a strategy RPG made by Konami that released on the Playstation and Sega Saturn. It was successful enough to have a sequel made of it and now, more than a decade later, a prequel in the form of Vandal Hearts: Flames of Judgment for XBLA and PSN. A decade has brought more than a little advancement in technology, so it should come as no surprise that Vandal Hearts: Flames of Judgment looks markedly different from Vandal Hearts II, but you might be surprised...
